AOA recruitment
I was sitting here tonight and wondered why the AOA doesn't really do any recruiting type events. For instance, at most of the companies here in the US, the union will hold a new hire welcome party. Granted, union membership is also usually compulsory at least initially since we were under one collective bargaining agreement. That underscores to me the need for the AOA to do more. All new joiners are in the Headland for around four months. There is an AOA lounge right there at the commercial stores building, it would be easy to hold some events to get the new guys out for some informational events as well as connect more senior pilots to the group. You could have it while the guys are doing the CAD stuff, no problem taking a few hours off during that two week period.
Seems to me with the membership low it is time to recruit rather than just hope people come to the AOA. I have not joined yet, I probably will and most likely would have already if anyone had shown the interest to bring us into the fold. Just a thought, flame suit on.

Don't want to ruin anyones illusions but a couple of facts for your edification.
1. We tried to get a list of new joiners from CX who refused to give us the ifo (please see letters on AOA website.
2. Despite the above when we had the capacity we did a number of open houses in the lounge. When we have the capacity we will continue to.
Of course any members who volunteer to assist with running open days would be of great help.

I've been told that the AOA is actually not allowed to approach pilots, but that YOU need to approach the AOA. However, to answer the comment about CX not giving out new-hire names, we all get mailboxes on day one that are in order of hiring.....it shouldn't be that difficult to figure out. I know there is a desire for some to join the AOA, but there has been no real incentive to do it. Having come from an airline where it was 100% union and seeing how it didn't do anything, it makes it tough to justify joining another union that is voluntary where the company still does what they choose anyway. Please someone prove me wrong. Seriously.

Actually they’re not issued like that at all. If they were my seniority number would be the same as my mailbox. If only it was…

I understand that mail boxes given to new recruits are not necessarily in numerical order and if someone has left the company then that box is used so completely out of order and rather hard if trying to guess without a list from the company.

Ex ASL Crew
As of January 1, all remaining ASL crew are on the bottom of the seniority list. Questions for AOA membership.
1. Will these crew applying for membership be accepted?
2. Will there be a effort made by the AOA to recruit them?

How about a sausage sizzle? You might attract the tight @rse guys who are just too tight to part with the fees? Or, make individuals not represented negotiate their own contracts.

After almost 15 years of AOA membership, I am beginning to think that it is futile to continue. I am deeply disappointed with the developments of the past few years. We have given up nearly everything the company wanted, with absolutely nothing to show for it. Now it seems that we can't even establish a simple seniority list. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

The Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association was first registered as a Trade Union in 1963 to represent Pilots and Flight Engineers employed by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.
This sounds good. Is it true? If not, what is the real situation? What legal rights does a Trade Union have in Hong Kong? There must be a charter, what does it say?
The Association continues to be the only representative body for Cathay Pacific Pilots that is recognised by the management of Cathay Pacific Airways.
This is important, and if it is true then why doesn't everyone belong? Or, can the pilots be represented without belonging to the association. Perhaps they can, but without their active participation (pay dues, attend meetings, vote) their voices will not be heard and they will not be able to control events within the union. The people who control events are the ones who's self interests are best served and why not?
Our constructive engagement with the Company continues to deliver beneficial agreement on issues of importance to all Cathay Pacific Pilots.
Without full participation, how can we make this a reality?

Have a once a month get-together in the AOA offices at hello kitty city.
Word will spread to the new joiners fast enough.

Well as a member for the AOA I would be glad to attend one of these nights.
It only needs to be asked for by the AOA and I'm there.
It will need the AOA to arrange though, maybe JF could use some of our office staff to put together a welcome pack?
Make it the same day each month, say the first Moday of the month perhaps?
