Who is this joker anyway(411A), sounds like he is full of S*$&, and most likely a local himself.
I'm currently working for a major in Aust. and would like to let all CX staff know that what you are doing is important.
CX has held you at gun point for far too long, and I think that finally they are going to pay the price.
The majority of you have shipped out to stinking HK, on crappy pathetics promise of relatively good pay and working conditions.
I for one think that it is criminal for the company to then turn around and at will alter the terms and conditions you all work under.
People may argue that you are still on a very good wicket but that is not the point. Tax may also be low in HK but look at the local infastructure and conditions you all live in (not to mention cost of living).
It is time for all CX crew to unite against the tyranny of the four eyed bean counters and prove to them you are not a group to be F&*^%$ with anymore.
I am sure the majority will stand tall and not be disbanded by what I am sure is a very small minority (trying to acheive their own agenda).

Gas Chamber, I don't want to get involved in the politics of today as I am retired. However I must tell you that Cathay have been very good to me for 25 years and it has been the best company I ever worked for. By the way,That "stinking place Hong Kong" is not too bad at all once you get used to it. Just ask your wife for example how she would like to have an ahma (servant) to do all the chores like cooking, cleaning, washing, baby sitting for a pittance that even a S/O can afford?

You have been away far too long. I don't know when you left the SAR, of if you did but we got rid of our amah five years ago because even a HK B-scale wasn't enough. I can't imagine trying to get by on S/O pay in HK with a family. No offense but many of your vintage haven't a farking clue what it is like to be in HK on the 'new deal'.

Yep - I must agree. Since this is not directly industrial, I shall comment. I am a S/O with two kids and am absolutely struggling up here. As for an Amah - not a chance! I am able to get one in once every fortnight at best. To put the kids through a DECENT school costs alot of money and as I am a long way off promotion, it won't get any better. As for me, I'm heading back to Aussie if I get the chance. It's just not worth it up here. My neighbour is an F/O and he has one youngster. Although he's on better pay, he doesn't really find it much better. He also feels he can only afford a part time Amah - albeit once or twice a week. I see you're retired - no doubt an A scaler. Well, those rates made the job and living in HKG all that more bearable (i.e. some return on the pain) and were some recompense for being away from home. Some people will say 'sod off if you don't like it then!'. That's all well and good, but when faced with the current aviation scene back home, I made the decision to head overseas to a job all the shiny company pamphlets said was fantastic.

I can't imagine how an S/O can't afford a full time amah in Hong Kong. The standard wages for a full time Filipino amah is $3680 a month. Unlike the CX pilots, they only get 12 months wages in a year. And of course no share options and bonus sharing. Taking their airfare into account, let's call it $4000 a month. Any disbeliever may cross-examine the figures with the Labour Department in Hong Kong. $4000 is probably about 12% of an S/O's salary. In relative terms, I believe 12% is affordable in any country.

Hustler,
Yes is the answer. Tell me the figure if I am wrong. But please make sure that you have included the 13th and the 14th month pay. Although I understand that the 13th is guaranteed but the 14th will depend on the business. TT is not always telling the truth but this time I think he is not far from it.

$31275 per month before tax. 13th month is immaterial, tax man takes it all. Supporting two plus kidz is very very trying. Remember our retirement package? Its a crap shoot, so we have to save our own cash, can't do that on SO salary. Don't forget, 4 of you in 1000sq ft at best.
