Talking Your thoughts on Hong Kong

Hey CX folks, just wondering what your thoughts were on living in Hong Kong? (while working for CX.)

I'm just putting my initial CX application together, and to be honest am quite excited about it...! Hong Kong just appeals to me.

I do realise there's some 'unrest' in the Co., but I really don't want to hear about it, not in this thread. I'll deal with that when it becomes a direct issue for me specifically.

I just want to know what you guys/gals think of Hong Kong as a place to live?

Cheers,

Turbofan

Thumbs up

Hong Kong is not bad place after all, the flats are very spacious, the locals always welcome you with a friendly smile on the bus, price of meat and dairy products have to be second to none and last but not least, the city is very clean.

Good Luck

Hey JL...nice sense of humour.

Turbofan..take what Lopez said, turn it around 180 degrees and then you have a real idea of what HK is like.
Shoebox flats, rabid locals, exorbitantly priced fresh(?) produce and air you can see.

Still want to come?

You said you would deal with CX problems when they become a direct issue!! That is a bit naive. Measure twice, cut once.

Red face

JL, I should thank you for your sarcastic post to an honest question from someone who knows very little of the region - I admire your insightful replies, and hope to hear more from you in the future... (Tell me, was the humour in that post lost in the maze of cyberspace, or do you get some perverse pleasure from being naturally deceiving and misleading... apologies if it's the first.)

Fookungdo, thanks for putting me straight. As for being naive, well I'm not quite following. Any problems (assuming there would be any, which I kinda doubt) would only be a consideration if I were to be accepted into the company. Also my perspective is perhaps a little different than most, in that all I'm concerned about is captaining a heavy for an international carrier. I'll make large concessions for everything else.

Any further comments appreciated.
Cheers,

Turbofan

Turbo;

I would rethink your perspective. Concessions you make now could seriously bite you in the future, or haven't you been paying attention?

Turbofan, I lived in Hong Kong for 33 years. 25 of them flying for CX. Loved every minute of it! However, things have changed; high level of pollution, cost of living very expensive but still a vibrant hive of activity in every sense. One word of advise, if you do join, buy real estate, don't rent.

Hey Turbofan(wishfull thinking?) I got news for you, we all came here to fly airplanes, but guess what? You gotta have a life as well!Right now we do NOT! PS. With quotes like yours stating that your only concern is being a captain on a big airplane & you'll make large concessions for everything else, here's a bit of advise: with an attitude like that, you will spend your career bending over TAKING those concessions, if you know what I mean! Good luck!

Turbofan... If you are done playing with your dad's computer, then turn it off.

Also you are now banned from ever visiting "Stinky Harbour" ever again.

Oh, by the way, make sure the door doesn't slam you in ass on the way out!!

Regards,

Jennifer Lopez

LMAO
You people seem a tad high strung...

OK, I'm learnin' about the ins and outs of your situation, and I'm sure they'd affect me should I ever join the company. But with that in mind I'm not going to shy away from CX just because there's some big issues coming to a head. I have to focus on building a career, and if Cathay happens to be the first to offer me the opportunity to further that career, I'll take it. Then I'll deal with any problems.

And for those of you trying to put me straight, I'm actually thankful (and no, the offensive nature of some posts doesn't affect me ). I do need as many different perspectives as I can get.

Cheers,
Turbofan

Looking back, that large concessions point was a bit short sighted of me.

I guess when it comes down to it I'd want to be properly compensated in all ways just like the rest of you, once my career there had started. Let's not lose sight of the fact that you guys are there and I'm not, we have different perspectives. I'm open to learning your side more thoroughly of course, as long as it's put forward in a mature fashion.

Turbofan, please don't judge the rest of us by the likes of J Lo, etc.,(who could be anybody, including management, CX crew, non-CX crew, or any other sh*t-stirrer). You have called at a rather tense time and on most subjects you will find a general agreement to keep silent from the vast majority of genuine CX crew.

To answer your original post: Hong Kong is vibrant, exciting, entrepeneurial, modern, has loads of money to spend on state-of-the-art stuff and does so. It is also very expensive, polluted, ferociously hot and humid in the summer months, has very little in the way of a collective social conscience and also has Big Brother Beijing looking over its shoulder.

Good luck with your application but do not be fooled by the shiny jets - there are a multitude of unexpected hoops to jump through, many of which have nothing to do with aviation which may cause the shine to tarnish. That's up to you.

Question

I tried this on Terms... forum
1. How much Cathay Second Officer takes home
2. What are cost of living in Hong Kong (rent of 3 bedroom appartment - nothing special in good neiborhood).
3. How much are housing and education allowances and do they cover the expenses.
4. What's S/O's typical roster. How many hours per month and how many days out of home?
5. Any other info you deem appropriate
Looks like most of the answers are in HKALPA dokuments I'm waiting to be fwd to me, however my wife keeps asking about days out of base per month. I applied for S/O on B747/4 or 777.
Thanks

I think some people have forgotten what it is like standing on the other side of the fence when the new B777 parks at the bay at the airport, wishing that you could fly one of those one day.
Yeah your right, i DONT know what the whole living in HK, putting up with the crap is like. But C'mon just remember what it was like way back when the shoe was on the other foot.

Good luck turbofan, hope things work out for ya

Before you start with the abuse, dont bother it doesnt worry me. Just give us people who arent there yet a bit of a break

Thumbs down

I gave HK a shot for 4 years. The constant barage of concesions requested by the company, the lack of days off, in short the lack of a lifestyle which I think I deserve, drove me back home.

The idea of driving a shiny new widebody might appeal to you now, but it goes old pretty quick. Just like living out of a suitcase for days on end. A hotel room in Brisbane is pretty much the same as a hotel room in Paris, Rome or Essex for that matter.

Think long term my friend...

Just wait till you see the Airbus A340-600.

You won't even want to pax on a B777 after that!

Good luck to you.
