Lost the Touch. ?
822 overshoots since Chek Lap Kok opened in 1998. [SCMP today]. Kai Tak with its 50 years of mainstream operations would not have a record even close to that. Am I being unkind in thinking you gents are loosing [have lost] the touch. I certainly hope thats not the case but that black hole between disconnecting the autopilot and waiting for help to land [ from the radio altimeter calls] might be very real to some. Perhaps those switched on Germans have got it right by insisting on a high degree of hand flying.` 828a

I smell a wind up. Looking at the hero’s profile I notice he is an airline pilot and fighter pilot and living in Australia. Last time I looked Australia didn’t have a National Guard like the USA.

Actually on the -400 (at CX), hand flying is not the preferred method of departure or arrival - according the the 3rd floor.
At CX for example you can hand fly as often as you want.

Silderfuchs:
Never flown into Chep Lap Kok, overshot at Kai Tak many times and I am very very familiar with wind shear. Is not that the thing you sense with your backside and do something about pronto. I might point out to you that I cant remember encountering wind shear with the autopilot engaged. If there was even the slightest possibilty of wind shear being around below 1500 ft then both the A/P and A/Ts would be off. Conditions of typhoon, monsoon or frontal took precedence over any warning from the tower .I preferred one hand on the wheel, one hand on the thrust levers, both elbows pressed into the armrests and both feet on the pedals. [Sort of sending a message to the aircraft just as its sending one to me ] I dont think that sitting there with the A/P engaged waiting for an aural warning to tell you a correctable flying problem has arisen can be "better airmanship'' [your words ] Regards 828a.
404; That fighter pilot stuff on my profile is past history, the days before I changed jobs. I\'m sorry if it offends you and I will ask the moderator to remove it. It was only after typing it in that I realised it should not be there but I dont know how to remove it. 828a. Mr MODERATOR ; Would you please delete the words Fighter Pilot from " Occupation "on my profile as it was entered in error. 828a.

Silberfuchs; I am not going to disagree with what you have just said but I would like to remind you of two recent appauling go arounds. The first a BA B747 400 that took itself around when the F/o selected the Toga/Ga button instead of the A/ts off button. Both pilots were taken by surprize and could not understand why the thrust levers were going forward and the nose was pitching up. The Captain got the message when the stick shaker went off at around 28 degrees nose up. What price scaning. ?? The second case is the recent Cx affair which I'd rather not think about much less discuss. Again, what price scaning. ?? Yes it's all changed and while I will conceded you possible run a good ship the fact remains that you are no longer as good a pilot as you could be.Can you still scan in sequence,? can you hold a rock steady heading on the ILS to 200 ft.? Can you stay on the glide slope with the airspeed steady and the sink rate stable. ? Can you assess heading change when drift creeps in AND can you do all these things at the same time and land with your palms dry. You gave me the modern operation and I' just given you the old one. Regards; 828a.

Thanks for the info, I have corrected the "error" in my profile and paid a little more care to the sub headings this time.

Good final point Silberfuchs, think about how you are going to execute a G/A from a point above 1000 feet......most people haven't as is clearly evident when asked to do such in the sim.
A G/A is not a difficult manouvre, nor should it be but it does require some pre thought and this is where many fall as we (as a collective body) are so preoccupied on getting the dunlops on the asphalt.

Silberfuchs: You raise some good points and I'm not going to refute any of them because to do so would be to deny progress. However one cant but sometimes wish the Ariel, Taiping and Lightning were still around. I've enjoyed the debate as its kindled a few memories and wasn't it Antoine de Saint- Exupery who said "memories are invisible wealth". Safe flying, Regards. 828a.
