Not going
Don’t think they can offer me enough incentive to leave family and friends and lifestyle in Oz to be miserable in HK with nearly 7 million Chinese crammed into a country with the highest population density in the world.
I only have 2 kids and they are growing up fast. They need both parents when they are teenagers to ensure they grow up in a happy family. Too much youth suicide, drugs, depression, peer pressure etc if you take your finger off the pulse.
It is just not worth it for the few years left to do things together like what I’m doing tonight.. Watching the Rugby with them and running together in the City-to-Surf tomorrow.

Has it ever occured to you that many of the pilots in CX are from Australia and have children too? Do you really believe that they are all miserable and that their kids are on drugs?
To foster the idea that by going to HKG you are going to be miserable and your kids are more likely to go off the rails isn't very real is it?
No drug problems or kids running amok in Australia then? And do you really believe you would have less control in HKG than you do now?
I am assuming, of course that you wouldn't be thinking of clearing off to HKG on your own and leaving the family behind.

Blue Eagle - of course I wouldn't have any control living thousands of miles away in HKG, let alone the pressure that puts on my partner.

Because I applied a long time ago. Now, I realise there are a lot better opportunities coming up in much better places and that the pay and conditions aren't really that good in KA. As I said before - no incentive to leave or uproot my family.

I seriously cannot agree with you any further. From a 14 year old's point of view. HKG is a lovely place. The kids may look bad to you but I can tell you it's all fashion. I have cousins in HKG and I visit them regularly. The style they dress in looks weird to us Australians. HKG is a lively place where people love partying, having fun and catching up with style and techonology.
In EVERY country, there's kids who takes drugs. It depends on how you raise your kids. I have friends in Australia who are very good and know some at my school who are smoking and mucking around. My parents always tell me to stay away from them and I do. The bad kids are the ones that usually have no one that cares for them, their parents are too busy working and they don't get enough love. If you care for your kids, then you're ok
A pilot has half of the month away from home. During the time when you're away, it depends on your wife. If you have a good wife, then again your kids will be ok. My parents always say to me, no matter what school you go to, it all depends on the kid themselves and the parents. My mum doesn't go to work because she wants to keep an eye on me and my siblings. She's the Queen to me
. My dad comes back pretty late because he has to work and make money for his family, his children, my mum and himself. My parents are very great to me and I'm sure most parents are real great too! Take time, explain to them the bad things and good things and they will understand.
HKG is a lovely place! You won't regret living there and raising your kids
I like Sydney personally because I was born here and growing up here since I was a baby. HKG will always be my second preferance for where I want to live. I agree with all that BlueEagle had said in this thread.

Sorry Blue, what's the big deal about bringing your family with you? Are you suggesting they try to MAKE you! What the hell for? What's that got to do with anything.

The is no 'Big Deal', as you put it WTFAW, when you go to work for a foreign company in a foreign land it is the NORM to relocate, has been for years. Sometimes, if you're lucky, just a few companies will let you base yourself away from the company home base, (and that may be where your home is), if it suits them. Some companies who have tried it are already winding up their overseas bases, (SIA for example), because for one reason or another it doesn't work.
It would be unrealistic to expect to come from Australia to HKG to work for a local short to medium haul carrier and commute to Australia on your days off. As I have said, when you go to work overseas it is the NORM to take your family with you, not expect to commute.

Ah rugby, training starts for kids again in Hong Kong in September and my rug rat will be there huffing and puffing with all the rest. Hong Kong is a great place to live and work if you are so inclined. Oz is ok too, if you don't mind getting taxed to hell. Good luck nexus in your first round interviews. I do have a problem, however, how can I earn enough money to retire in Honkers because that is what I want. BTW, WTFAW, Blue Eagle didn't misread or misquote your initial post on this thread. Your english expression on the subject of drugs was poor and easily misunderstood.

I'm afraid you have absolutely no idea what your talking about, with regard to life in Hong Kong.
I was brought up in Hong Kong and I can honestly say that the problem with drugs in schools was minimal and the facilities for kids in Hong Kong second to non.

Made a Choice
That's what I did. I had a long hard look at what I had and what I would miss.
My kids are 13 and 15 and I love the life I have here with them. It is not worth it. I had a look at KA and what they had to offer wasn't worth missing the few years I would have left to be a "Dad"... You know those years where your kids want you around and are still around themselves. It goes too quickly and is too short..
I simply decided I would wait and hopefully something here or in a better base would come up.

You are so far off the mark it's funny!
I have been here 5 years with 4 kids teenagers and younger and the life style, sport and social life far exceeds what they had in Aus. They are better rounded, racial tolerant and in a safer enviroment. I think you failed the KA interview and are bitter
