Angry Duplicate Postings

Will you guys please STOP doing duplicate postings of the same thread of more than one forum.

It really p***** me off when after going to the trouble of responding to your questions, we find the same question elsewhere - with, more often than not, the same answers (but from somebody else).

Think!! Which is the most appropriate forum for your question and post it - ONCE!!

If it's one of those oddball questions - and you don't know where to put it- give it your best shot. If the "board" thinks it should be somewhere else then the powers that be will move it for you.

Keygrip,

Occassionally, it seems to make sense to post a question in two different forums because it's equally valid in both. Posting duplicates may open the question up to a wider audience, and increase the chances of getting the answer you're looking for.

For clarification - is a suitable compromise to allow us to post, in one forum, a link to a thread in another forum?

Thanks!

FFF - it's certainly better than having two threads covering the same stuff.

I undertsand, and agree 100% with what you say - and have sometimes done just that (though have used "the powers" to lock one of the duplicates to stop people answering in the wrong place).

Links would be great, yeah.

wasn't that long ago that a nameless mod did exactly what you are describing but didn't link to the duplicate post until his error was pointed-out...

You should have waited a bit longer before posting this thread me thinks - PF contributors have loooong memories

Yep - I did - hadn't even thought of it. Was simply trying to prevent the duplication that I am criticising now. It was a good idea to put the links in.

The bit that bugs me - apart from the bandwidth argument - is when somebody asks a question (potentially, a fairly serious question) and you see that nobody has answered.

Off you go to the reference material, collecting links from other websites, looking up chapter and verse from publications to ensure that the answers are as correct as you can get them, and then type it all out, proof read it, proof read it again - submit it - then spot the typo and go back in to edit it.

A decent question can take 30 minutes or so to submit a thorough response with good information.

Then, feeling satisfied that you've helped - you go surfing into another forum and find the same question, with a string of answers already applied to it - saying exactly the same stuff that you have just done. That's why when I do the duplicates - which are (normally) specifically designed to try and help and educate fellow students and pilots - I lock all but the thread I consider to be in the most appropriate forum.

I'm still open to ideas - if somebody knows of a better way then, please, tell me - as you did when I missed the link recently.

Some of the duplicates are "broadcasts" from the mods about the boards. Examples are the (what were) new forums and there terms of engagement - or the upcoming GatBash - but these don't need replies, they are statements.

Dublin - without wishing to sound a smart**** - "you" don't.

It's a moderator 'power'. What I used to do (in the days when I din't know HOW to post a link) was just point people in the direction of the thread that you would like to be answered - with a phrase like "Please don't respond here - post replies in the thread on **** forum"

Or write to amod and ask them to lock one for you - or "sticky" one if it ought to stay near the top for a while.

Thats a good point by Keygrip about multiples.

I sometimes get the odd e-mail asking if it is ok to post in here and somewhere else and sometimes, I have done this quite a lot too, I move a copy of a post thinking it will get more coverage and a better response in two forums. When I do this I always tell the other forums moderator so they don't move it elsewhere or delete it or something like that.

I will only move/copy the thread if I think it will do well in two forums. The downside of doing this though is copying the post to the other forum then seeing it already there....

It sometimes can't be helped when someone new posts multiple in other forums. They should know better if they have read through the conditions when they sign up. More-often than not, they don't, and when you point the error out to them they always apologise and things are ok then. Its when regular posters do it that gets on our nerves.

I would suggest to anyone who is not sure and anyone who wants to post in more than one forum, to post in one forum then ask the mod of the other forum(s) if they can post in there too. Doing it this way shouldn't really be a problem, a bit of courtesy always goes down well.

Why don't you stick a

DO NOT POST THE SAME THREAD IN MORE THAN ONE FORUM

at the top of each page? And then lock/close every instance of the same topic when someone crossposts? They'll soon learn to only post a single thread - if they want a response, anyway.

Cool calm and collected,

Stress less and relaxed,

Duplicate Postings

Sorry if I give offense, but being anxious to get some info ... and not knowing where best to go, I posted the following in two forums (GA & C & LA):-

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PPL Flying in Cancun Mexico

Am planning on having a couple of weeks in Cancun at Christmas and wonder if I can hire a light plane in Cancun (presumeably with a local instructer as my JAR PPL won't get me too far). For a little trip round and to take some photos.

Have already flown in Tenerife and Crete this year (where my JAR PPL does work) and want to carry on in all my holiday destinations.

All help gratefully accepted.

(also posted on Carribean and Latin America Forum)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have attempted to make it clear that I have posted twice thus not causing
Keygrip's problem of researching the same subject that somebody else has. I would be mad as hell if I had done that !!!

However - as neither Forum has elicited any response at all ....... I don't seem to have done myself any good either.

If no replies appear, I will perhaps post again in a couple of months .... in case somebody who is away now comes back into one of the forums .... but ..... Is it OK to duplicate post if I make it clear that I've done so ???

TMF Hi there. I would, if I were you, post the question again in this forum nearer the time. As soon as it goes up I will then copy it for you (see my post above about 2 different forums) to the other forum.

With your question, I believe that it would be ok in both forums but I stress that this is just my own opinion, not the opinion of any of the other mods or admins.
I hope you get the advice you are looking for.
Good luck.

Duplicate Postings

BRL, thanks for the advice. I'll have a try again in a couple of months. My original post on this forum is now on about page 3, so hardly likely to be spotted now.

There is always hope in the C & LA forum as I am still on the front page (although it seems that nobody much ever visits there !!!)

Maybe - like with Tenerife and Crete, I'll won't get any knowlegable answers and will end up researching it from scratch myself.

TMF

Is there a way to create a link that jumps directly to a thread you have posted in another group? Or do you just create a new msg in the other groups, Saying :

Have posted XXX Question in YYY forum.

Or on my part is it a case of RTFM, and the answer is somewhere on the site.

Unfortunately it may be a pain for the moderators, and people who regularly trawl through a lot of groups to find a duplicate postings and replies, but quite often you find that if you post a message to just one group, leave it 4-5 days to see if you get a reply, and nothing. Then you post to a second group, and go through the same waiting again. It can take a while to get any replies. Different people read different groups, and you are targetting a different audience with each posting. There is probably a lot less people that look at multiple groups, when compared to those that only look at specific groups.

As an idea, how about having a section on the post reply page that allows automatic cross posting. Have a drop down list that allows the poster to select which other groups to post to. Anyone who replies from any of the groups that the posting went out to, automatically appears in all other groups. Effectively only one message, and set of replies stored once. Possibly with an Icon/Smilie Face reserved soley for auto cross posted messages.

This would keep everyone happy. Or maybe not???

Cheers

Skyfarmer,

These instructions are for Microsoft Internet Explorer, but it will be similar for most web browsers.

Open the original thread. The Address bar at the top will read something like this:

Code:
http://www.pprune.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=96151
Copy this into the clip-board (Highlight it, then press Ctrl+C).

Now, create a new thread in a different forum. Insert the link to your original thread by clicking on the button that says "http://". Enter some text to be displayed and press Ok. Then you will be asked for the full URL. Click in the text box, and paste the address that you copied earlier (Ctrl+V).

Hope that explains it clearly enough!

OK, thanks for that, i do understand how to add a link, but probably did not phrase the bit below well enough.

Is there a way to create a link that jumps directly to a thread you have posted in another group? Or do you just create a new msg in the other groups, Saying :

Probably should have read:

Is there a way to create a link that jumps directly from the Msg Subject line to a thread you have posted in another group? Or do you just create a new msg in the other groups with a link in the text box

What I was getting at was pretty much what I ask for later.

I do not know how the message database is set up for the forums, is it a seperate database per group, or are they all combined in to one db and flagged as to which group they belong to?. If the latter, then it should not be too much of a difficulty to have one msg thread running simultaneously and being viewed and replied to in all groups. This would then enable people to cross post, without having the problems described at the start of this thread.

Oh, I see!

No, no way of doing that as far as I know. Unless the mods have some special secret trick they can use!

If they are reading this maybe they can see what can be done?

On the front end side it would just require another area with the various other forums listed, probably as a drop down box, with check boxes next to each group you wish to post to?

Hi Skyfarmer. I don't know the technical side of this board or how it's run, that is in the hands of the admins of the site. If you wish, you can contact them with these questions by pressing the ' Contact Us 'button. I am sure you would get some good feedback from them doing it this way.

As for multiple posts, well, we do try to encourage people not to do this. If I read it right, what you are asking for is when you write a new thread there is an option to send that new thread to a few other forums? If this is the case then that would be seen as a form of the dreaded 'Multiple posting ' and we don't like that here. Please see my post a few above this about how to deal with posting in more than one forum.
Hope this has shed-a-bit-of-light on things for you and sorry to keygrip for hi-jacking his thread...!!!!!!!!!!!!!
