FI Renewal
Hi, apologies in advance as I know this subject is touched on every year, but I wanted to check that the situation has not changed recently.
So, I was a QFI at a UK flying club until 1996, then into airline work since. I have recently retired, somewhat unexpectedly after the Thomas Cook collapse. I would like to continue to fly and going back to FI seems logical. At the time of finishing I had about 1200 hrs of instructing logged. My TT is 13000 hrs.
If I have read previous posts correctly, I need to have a Renewal of my FI rating which appears on the back of my ATPL.
This would consist of approaching an ATO.
Being assessed for training needs.
Completing an ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCE.
Attending an Instructor Seminar.
After which I would presumably have a restricted FI rating reinstated on my licence. But would be free to Instruct for pay.
I'd be really interested if anyone who has done this could give me an idea of how much they paid to get the boxes ticked. Also, how it worked out for them in terms of finding students to teach.
Thanks in advance.

A bit simpler than that, all you need is a Seminar and a A of C, no need for an ATO as such. The Examiner could do training with you or you could go to an ATO to do it. With the experience stated I can see no reason why you would be restricted, that is simply like the old AFI to allow a FI to gain sufficient experience to judge when a student is capable of doing a first solo. Nowadays you can be remunerated on a PPl for flight instruction. There is a change to the Seminar requirement in the latest FCL amendment, it says Theoretical Refresher Training at an ATO, which may of course be a Seminar.

See CAP 1585c. https://www.caa.co.uk/cap1585c
Not quite. The amended FCL.940.FI(a) and (b) requirements both refer to 'instructor refresher training as an FI at an ATO or at the competent authority'. The forthcoming AMC1 FCL.940.FI(a)(2) will state that this refresher training should be a 2 day seminar. So no significant change, just editorial correction.
