Read this line in a school operations manual recently.."A single turn spin (PA28 -140) and recovery shall be assumed to require 1200 feet. Subsequent turns require the addition of 300 feet."
Anybody have a similar "quote" for a C152 and/or C172??

The amount of altitude lost in a spin depends on how the entry was made. On average in a Cessna 152/172 I'd say 700 feet for the first turn and 400 for each turn after that.

Remember the quote uses the word "assumes" and is the worst possible case, to allow for the calculation of a safe start height. In the case quoted, the maximum allowance for height loss is to cover a delayed recovery.

Don't forget to allow for altimeter lag if you are daft enough to do a prolonged spin, someone I know decided to see how many turns he could get in from 10,000'. He started the recovery at what he thought was going to recover by 3,000', but by the time the altimeter caught up with the aircraft at the end of the spin the ground was a LOT closer than he expected!

Hi,
PA28 Cherokee 140s are cleared for spinning. They spin better than 152s which can be awkward sometimes (although the PA28-140 has its days of reluctancy too).
Yes I have spun both types.
PA28-161 Warrior - Yes they will spin...and no they are not cleared to. In fact almost every a/c on the planet will spin - even those that claim they cant be...I have had 2 flights in the last 3 months where the 'student' (sometimes a PPL holder.!) has mishandled rudder in a clean stall and in both cases the a/c flicked. On that basis I assume that the next 3 turns will occur in the normal manner - however, given the warrior is not cleared for spinning i wasn't very keen on finding out...'i have control' is never a problem after a flick - students eyes are already showing alarm from hanging vertical for the first time in their flying lives!!!!!!

Oddly enough it was idle power. Thats what shocked me...5 years stalling PA28s - never had one enter an incipient. Mild...um when I say flick I am talking about about the speed of entry to the incipient (which from my aerobatics seems similar in speed to a flick) - so it was pretty rapid....suprised me as well I can tell you...One moment happy in the stall, next stood on a wing tip!
