Initial Training on Super Cubs
When you've got a new student do you sit him/her in the back as there are no engine start bits in the back, and how do you teach them how to start the engine once they sort of know what they are doing ? Any info would be appreciated.

In the back for the first couple (assuming ab-initio), but make sure that they know which one is the flap lever and which way the trim goes before they get into the front.
I've done a few conversions from C152s etc. and then they can go straight into the front because I know that they know about trim, carb heat and flap levers (if applicable). Haven't actually taught ab initio in a Cub though I would dearly love to. Makes the cross countries a bit more fun when you can land anywhere!
As for how to teach them to start, well that's what homework is for, and if they can't recite the drills in correct order (with some prompting) they're in the back for this one, 'sorry but do your homework or bring a checklist!' Patience works well too, and taking the time to explain things has worked for my students so far.

Hi at last a sensible thread.Yes you can use the brakes from the back,Cub brake as most will know can be awkward to operate,as they are heel brakes and not connected with the rudder pedals.Make sure you know your Cubs as some are flown solo from the front and some the back.I also reckon to start as you mean to go on sit the student in the P1 seat.Anyway the Instructor usualy feels more comfortable in the instructors seat,even if its the back of a T6.I for one like the back of a Chippy /further from the crash!!! Bye for now
