Gentlemen and ladies,
Does anyone possess a copy of Derek Collier Webb's 'UK Flight Testing Accidents 1940-1971' published by Air-Britain?
There is none on Amazon, EBay and famous name bookshops in the UK seem to have none on the shelves.
I am researching the demise of a German Arado Ar196 float plane which crashed on 'landing' at Loch Gare, Helensburgh, Scotland, on 28.4.1940 This accident is covered in Derek's book and I am desperately interested in one certain aspect of this aircraft.
The RAF Museum Archives, The National Archive, The Norway Air Museum, and various WWII website forums, although recording the incident and other detailed information, have all proved negative so far. Unbelievably, the original 4 digit/letters German registration codes which were painted over by the Norwegians when it was captured, are not recorded.
I would like to know what Derek Collier Webb says of the aircraft. Can anyone help please?
Peter

That's an easy one Peter.
D C W says
26 (yes 26) April 1940
Arado Ar 196A
T3+? (not a typo)
Cdr C W Byas RN MAEE Helensburgh. This aircraft was captured in Norway on 8 April 1940 after forced landing near Lyngstad when running short of fuel. Operated briefly by unit FA2 of the Royal Norwegian Navy, it was then flown to Helensburgh via Sullom Voe and Leuchars, arriving on 24 April 1940. Handling trial. Approached too fast to land over flat calm water, held off too high, stalled, struck the water, overturned and sank at Rhu Dumbarton. 2 injured. Cat 5
He quotes as references:
Ministry of Defence Air Historical Branch Archives
(Aircraft & Accident Records and Casualty lists)
Impressments Log, (wotever that is!) Vol 4 - Peter W Moss 1966 - Air-Britain
War prizes - Phil Butler 1994 Midland Counties Publications ISBN 0-904597-86-5
Hope that helps
John

Peter, though it sounds like John has given the answer, I can also suggest that you contact this Steinar's Hangar - Republic Seabee STOL Twin Bee Trident Trigull Thurston Teal DHC-3 Otter DHC-6 Twin Otter Helicopters 719 Squadron Norway fellow, he is very well informed on such matters....

Hello John and Pilot DAR,
Very many thanks your prompt replies. John: Thank you for pointing out that the date of the crash was 26.4.1940 -the pale blue and very faint carbon copy of the crash investigator's report at the National Archives was either 26 or 28! He makes no mention of a T3+?? operational code marking (which had been painted over by the Norwegians when they 'nicked' it) but did mention a build date of 8.9.1939. I suppose the T3+?? must have come from the other sources you have mentioned.
The aircraft was from the German ship Admiral Hipper just prior to it being rammed by HMS Glowworm whose skipper received a posthumous VC. Due to bad weather and/or the sea battle the Arado was unable to return and landed in a Norwegian fjord short of fuel where it was commandeered.
Thanks to both of you for your help - I will be making further enquiries.
