Need some answers, Pleeease!!

Dear All,

I wish to become an Engineer and have found out about courses and so forth but I need some holes filling!!

I am in full time work and need to be so I have opted for home study with Licence by Post. What I would like to know is once I have completed all the modules for JAR 66 B1/2 can I get a job as a Mechanic, or do I need to gain work experience first.

I work at the airport so getting experience wont be a problem, but I would rather be paid to get it as a Mechanic than to do a few hours experience per week in the engineering office.

Please, a few simple answers will do nicely. Also has anyone ever done thier licence by home study? How long does/will it take?(I study hard).

Thanks for all your help in advance.

THE - ELITE,

I have posted a reply to your question of the same subject on Airmech.co.uk, but will repeat none the less.

Once you have passed all the modules, there is nothing to stop you getting a job as a mechanic, you WILL NOT be able to get your licence though.....

For a B1/2 licence you need 5 years "Active interest" in the industry, UNLESS you have attended and passed a JAR-147 approved JAR-66 basic training course, the requirement is then cut to 3 years experience.

The modules for the licence are only valid for 5 years, therefore if you pass the first one 6 months before you pass the last one, by the time you have completed your 5 years experience the first one will have expired!!!!! (What a mare!)

The B1 licence was primarily aimed at people already working in industry, or those on the aforementioned course.

I hope this help, it is confusing and a bit of a minefield at the best of times!

If you would like any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me on: [email protected]

Thanks Heli Eng,

I realise you answered me on Airmech, but I have had and heard so many contradicting stories that I need a final answer, it was getting silly. Even the engineers at my work couldnt give me an answer. It was only when I talked to a Mechanic from KLM that I knew I could get a job as one after the modules are passed, but I even wanted that confirmed because I had not heard that before.

So, thanks again for the kind reply. I am sure you will recieve an email from me shortly!!

The - Elite,
I certainly see the problems that Heli eng is talking about . I would imagine there would/could be a little flexibility from the CAA if you did not get the time frame of Exams passed/work experience gained absolutely down to the second. I think that if there are any grey areas with a persons particular circumstances , a carefully worded letter addressed to an 'Organ grinder' at aviation house would be of benefit to you.
If i was in that situation , I think the best bet would be to get all of the the examination modules taken and passed say within 4.5 years and then apply for the licence with 6 months of 'Work experience' still to go. in fact it might even pay you to get the modules out of the way soonest then start sending them letters asking for your licence every 6 months. The CAA have changed the rules in the recent past (ie only 1 month wait for a resit instead of usual 3 ) so there is no reason to think they won't change them in the future. if your letter is accompanied with one from your senior maint manager or quality manager as well , explaining whata great worker you are and how short of engineers they are ... well who knows - you don't ask ,you don't get.
HTH.
