Northern Air Services
Northern Air Services at Horn Island, Torres Straits ceased operations Wed night, 10th July 2002. Barrier Aviation leased the aircraft from the owners and retained all staff to continue trading as of Thursday 12th July, servicing existing contracts. Barrier will evaluate the viability of long term operations in the Straits. At Horn it's business as usual for the time being, the Blue Tails and their pilots are still flying all over the straits. ( 2x AC50's and 1 x BN2). Another chapter in the fragile world of General Aviation closes.
Did they sell the business or simply decide it wasn't profitable and close it down?
Seems like it's come the full circle as I think Northern actually took over the operations from Barrier Aviation (t/as Falcon Airlines) back in about 1997, not long after an Aztec went for a swim just north of Cairns.

Sue, the business was and is profitable but was supporting affiliated unprofitable companies. It was placed in voluntary administration and the hatchet guys went beserk (same ones who wrapped up UZU) . Barrier will make a good fist of it and get on with growing the business.

Southland, yes Coral Sea did have a AC 560E, VH-Caw up there, it's now operating in a training role at Kyneton.
Lefty, yes , Coral Sea did have a Shrike that went for a swim and sunk the company, refer ATSB site for details.
It's a tough world out there and in the end it's survival of the fittest, luck does not enter into the equation.

Known Big Wayne for a bloody long time and I'm genuinely sorry to hear about this.....Guess after a while one gets the sh!ts with this industry and the bullsh!t that happens day in and day out, and one just says ahh fvck it .
Last time I saw the Wayne was when he and I, Gary M, Gilly and big Jim M had a few bottles of red at the Oasis in Caloundra.....You shoulda been there torres....The occasion did lend itself to the mentioning of your name from time to time.

Mainframe. If it's the same liquidators as Uzu Air there won't be anything left after "fees and charges". There should have been $300,000 plus in Uzu to cover staff wages etc. After "fees and charges" and Applicant's costs, not one cent was left for employee entitlements or creditors payments. I lost $20,000.

Why are you surprised it's the first subject in Liquidators and Adminstrators 101.
1. First find out how much cash there is.
2. Size the time and length of the administration or liquidation around that quantum.
3. Practise saying, "We have investigated the accounts and receivables of the company and regret that after settling secured creditors and our costs there will be little left if any for the unsecured creditors. There are some matters that could be pursued that might produce funds, but would require the creditors to fund our attempts at their recovery."
A fail in this subject automatically fails the course.
Personally I think that staff creditors should be quarantined from the administrators and liquidators fees and should rank above any others.

Gaunty. The law gives Liquidators first cut of the cake, ahead of the ATO and staff. Usually, it seems, not even crumbs are left! The duration of the Liquidation is usually in direct proportion to the quantum of funds "to be absorbed".
Without being specific, I recall a Liquidator saying "Give me $50,000 and I'll put (Company) into a Deed (of Company Arrangement)."
I suspect the choice of liquidators, in Northern's case, was determined by a certain oil company. There's a lot to be said for jumping the gun and going into Voluntary Liquidation with a "friendly" Liquidator.
And in another prominent aviation related liquidation we're seeing a new accounting firm created, courtesy of an airline's creditors.
