Northern Air Services

Northern Air Services at Horn Island, Torres Straits ceased operations Wed night, 10th July 2002. Barrier Aviation leased the aircraft from the owners and retained all staff to continue trading as of Thursday 12th July, servicing existing contracts. Barrier will evaluate the viability of long term operations in the Straits. At Horn it's business as usual for the time being, the Blue Tails and their pilots are still flying all over the straits. ( 2x AC50's and 1 x BN2). Another chapter in the fragile world of General Aviation closes.

Torres 14th Jul 2002 00:33

That's sad. K Mart and Big W worked hard to have a go. I wish them well.

The Straits is the kiss of death for any fixed wing operator.

Sue Ridgepipe 14th Jul 2002 01:38

Did they sell the business or simply decide it wasn't profitable and close it down?
Seems like it's come the full circle as I think Northern actually took over the operations from Barrier Aviation (t/as Falcon Airlines) back in about 1997, not long after an Aztec went for a swim just north of Cairns.

Lefthanded_Rock_Thrower 14th Jul 2002 07:50

Soutland,

Wasn't it Coral Sea's Aerocommander that went for a swim off the undershoot of 14.

Mainframe 14th Jul 2002 07:57

Sue, the business was and is profitable but was supporting affiliated unprofitable companies. It was placed in voluntary administration and the hatchet guys went beserk (same ones who wrapped up UZU) . Barrier will make a good fist of it and get on with growing the business.:)

Mainframe 14th Jul 2002 08:03

Southland, yes Coral Sea did have a AC 560E, VH-Caw up there, it's now operating in a training role at Kyneton.

Lefty, yes , Coral Sea did have a Shrike that went for a swim and sunk the company, refer ATSB site for details.

It's a tough world out there and in the end it's survival of the fittest, luck does not enter into the equation.

Sue Ridgepipe 14th Jul 2002 08:50

Bit of a shame actually, I always had a lot of time for Wayne & Kay. They certainly put in a lot of time and effort, and I hope they haven't faired too badly in the end.

BongoDriver 14th Jul 2002 10:31

Kiss of Death Torres?

Skytrans have been operating in the Straits for a long time....

nasa 14th Jul 2002 21:56

Don't It Just P!ss You Off

Known Big Wayne for a bloody long time and I'm genuinely sorry to hear about this.....Guess after a while one gets the sh!ts with this industry and the bullsh!t that happens day in and day out, and one just says ahh fvck it .

Last time I saw the Wayne was when he and I, Gary M, Gilly and big Jim M had a few bottles of red at the Oasis in Caloundra.....You shoulda been there torres....The occasion did lend itself to the mentioning of your name from time to time. :D :D :D

I agree with Bongo....Aero Tropics has been around for a lotta years in one form or another as well.

Torres 15th Jul 2002 00:01

Bongo. I accept your comment but I always viewed Skytrans as a very successful Cairns based operator.

Mainframe. If it's the same liquidators as Uzu Air there won't be anything left after "fees and charges". There should have been $300,000 plus in Uzu to cover staff wages etc. After "fees and charges" and Applicant's costs, not one cent was left for employee entitlements or creditors payments. I lost $20,000.

nasa. I can well imagine my name being used in vein amongst that illustrious group. Frankly, I'm glad I wasn't there.

gaunty 15th Jul 2002 01:04

Torres

Why are you surprised it's the first subject in Liquidators and Adminstrators 101.

1. First find out how much cash there is.
2. Size the time and length of the administration or liquidation around that quantum.
3. Practise saying, "We have investigated the accounts and receivables of the company and regret that after settling secured creditors and our costs there will be little left if any for the unsecured creditors. There are some matters that could be pursued that might produce funds, but would require the creditors to fund our attempts at their recovery." :D

A fail in this subject automatically fails the course.
Personally I think that staff creditors should be quarantined from the administrators and liquidators fees and should rank above any others.

Torres 15th Jul 2002 03:16

Gaunty. The law gives Liquidators first cut of the cake, ahead of the ATO and staff. Usually, it seems, not even crumbs are left! The duration of the Liquidation is usually in direct proportion to the quantum of funds "to be absorbed".

Without being specific, I recall a Liquidator saying "Give me $50,000 and I'll put (Company) into a Deed (of Company Arrangement)."

I suspect the choice of liquidators, in Northern's case, was determined by a certain oil company. There's a lot to be said for jumping the gun and going into Voluntary Liquidation with a "friendly" Liquidator.

And in another prominent aviation related liquidation we're seeing a new accounting firm created, courtesy of an airline's creditors.

Gaunty, we missed our calling! It seems to be the only profession where rape is both legal and expected! Unless one can legislate to impose an Ansett Ticket Tax.....

nungry 15th Jul 2002 06:29

No, puck the big W- as they say, first impressions last, and I'll never forget flogging around in the 206, covered in bug sh*t and oil, and needed a desperate midday scrub, and he told me to get f*cked and get my own f*cken broom!! F*ck you, you stupid white c&nt!!! Karma brother - it gets you every time. Thats all I got to say about that.

Torres 15th Jul 2002 07:29

nungry. I don't recall Big W or Northern ever operating a Cessna 206 - or any single engine aircraft for that matter?

At least he gave it a go!

BongoDriver 15th Jul 2002 12:07

I think bala Nungry was refering to W not lending him a broom.

cleatus 16th Jul 2002 12:30

Wayne & Kay, sorry to hear of your current situation. We went our own ways not on the best terms, but I am eternally greatful for the chance you gave me for my first twin job. Thanks & best regards. God its good not to live on an airport anymore!

Torres the UZU liquidators owed me $3500, alot of money to GA pilot. Convert it to Kina & I would be a rich man!!!!!

nasa 17th Jul 2002 00:03

Is That Racism There nungry????

nungry....Jeezuss mate, you got off lite if that's all he told you....BTW, the jury is still out on your description of him being a white so & so :D :D

I know the Poo reads PPRUNE, and will be taking notes, so, to that end:

Hey W.....Hows the Scrareostar Door Going :D :D.....Sorry mate, can't help myself

Torres.....The conversation wasn't all bad, I do recall someone saying that you weren't fit to sleep with <insert various animal/ladies of ill repute>, but I stuck up for you and said you were   .....and it wasn't until we had consumed a number of bottles that you were mentioned, so all in all, you didn't fare to bad.

Torres 17th Jul 2002 02:21

nasa What an obscene thought!

Cleatus Yeah. Sorry about that........! Everyone should have got paid and possibly even the company saved, but as you well know it was totally taken out of my hands.
