Yes, you are correct, the tail outwards is one of the two options of position being considered ( the other being nose facing towards the road ). The final decision has not been made. Negotiations are still going on between the board and the council.
Elaborating on my earlier thread about the 'portable' taxiway.
The aircraft will be landing to the SW. The plan at the moment is to lay a road base from the runway to the apron, then lay portable steel planks down for the aircraft to be manoeuvred along on.
The small hangars ( garages, next to the terminal ) will be dismantled temporarily and the aircraft moved through the gap by the terminal, out onto the overflow car park.
Concrete is to be laid at the aircraft's final resting position for the undercarriage to sit on. Towing it nose-first into position is the easier option, but turning it around, and placing it's tail outwards is the other.
The associate of mine is also on the Qantas Founders Museum Board.

Good-on Qantas for this donation. Fly 'er in, stomp on the brakes and park 'er on the hard dirt (as they do int the US).

They'll probably lower the tyre pressures a tad to reduce the potential runway damage as Longreach's runway has a fairly low PCN.
I spoke to one of the crew who flew ECB into Marana recently. He said that it was very sad to see EAB lying on it belly with wings and landing gear removed. He said that there is a large machine that was taking a bite out of the wings lying nearby and "chomping" it up into small pieces which were then discharged with bobcats used to load them into trucks for recycling. Despite the fact that they do all they can to drain fuel from the wings prior to tearing them apart, it is not uncommon for a fire to start when this machine "bites" into the wing.
It's great that EBQ has been spared this fate.

I think it marvelous that one of the ladies that carried us Aussies all over the world can rest here.
Our kids will be able to see her and say "dad - did you fly on her"?

Look, don't get me wrong. I think it is a good thing that Qantas has donated an aircraft to a museum. Just don't go on about how magnaminous it is in the "financial penalty" department. Since S11 no-one wants the damn thing. Having it on display is a sound PR decision, but there are rumblings at the Board about taking the Qantas titles off it just in case it gets neglected over the years.

Mention - I know where you are coming from but the aeroplane in question could have been sold for $100,000 to Garuda like carrier.
The fact is that QF chose to go this path and good on them.
I have said it before and will say it again. I wanna be there for the final landing!!!

Why park the old airplane in outback Qld, when with a little thought, imagination, and care for others, the aircraft could be donated to the people of Afghanistan to help rebuild the poor country. (Assuming it is serviceable)
I am sure enough volunteer crew would be available to train the Afghan pilots and engineers.
If a relatively poor country like India can do it (see below) Surely Australia / Qantas can be just as generous.

How the hell are they going to stop that thing in LESS than 900m, and not set the hydraulic fluid on fire? Is there an engineer amongst us how can work out the decel, therefore F, and convert it to joules less a factor for spoilers, reversers etc? (or something like that.)
In the dim dark past ,Boeing used a novel way of demo-ing the -SP when it came to BN for the first time.A perfect landing on RWY 13-31. Going back thru an old VTC shows 13-31 was only 1360m.
With a limitation of 175psi for the pavement at YLRE and a length of 1936m. The PCN at 24 is greater than 14-32 at YBBN (1700m) with a PCN of 15 and a 145psi tyre rating. Which allows ops up to 57000kg on B73-'s. As a lowly PPL I do not believe it would be hard to get a classic down to about 170000kg with enough fuel for say an abort to YBMA or YBAS. Afterall it is a one-way only flight

I bet they get a nice tax break for it too! Donation to a charity, aircraft "write off" for the books, whatever, the beancounters would have some say in this.

Seriously I would really love to be there for the arrival as an historic occasion.
If we can get a date, I know I'll be checking my diary and flights and it would be nice to get a bunch of people together for the occasion.

Yes Miss - it sounds likea once in a lifetime event to me.
During the '89 dispute I thought seeing 747s landing at HBA was pretty good but this is a "oncer".
The fly by beforew would be a lifelong nemory too.
I just hope I can scam my way there for the event.
