QF to get 767-400s?

Persistent rumours circulating QF that Boeing are pulling out all the stops to get QF to buy the 767-400.

Deal includes buying back any delivered A330's (why have they cut back the initial order of those to 4 and cancelled many Toulouse trips for engineers?) and retrofitting all current QF -300 flight decks to -400 standard.

Boeing are apparently "a motivated vendor" as far the 767-400 goes.

Cool

Haven't heard 767-400's before, only 777's, but that's been doing the rounds for a while now!

As much as I would love to get my hands on a 76-400, I can't see it myself.

Cool

Yeah, We'd all like to see the 76-400 in Qantas service but I think that QF is too far down the track to back out of the A330 now. The investment is too big for Boeing to be able to offset.

BTW Cutie, none of the -300's have been modified with -400 flight decks and would not happen unless your rumour becomes a trumour.

Hmmm...drop the lead in aircraft to the A380? Dunno. Still, it would ensure QF took the title of most types in a fleet away from AN finally!!!

Question

eeerm....why on earth would you want 767-400's? Nobody else does.

777's maybe but the 767 is way past it's prime and not at all popular with passengers when there are wider widebodies like the A330 and 777 around (except the 777 with 5 abreast in economy).

Cathay, Singapore, Thai etc are all flying A330/340's and 777 into Oz....there is no way QF could retain any commercial advantage by renewing the fleet with the old Joan Collins 767 (might have been OK once but way past it's prime now).

Al, I guess that is why Boeing really wants to sell the -400 to QF.

QF already operate a bunch of 767's, they make money for them, and retrofitting the flight decks would eliminate most of the commonality problems with the -300.

Apparently the -400 flight deck is the same as the 777.

Now the 777 in QF colours...... pardon my drooling..

PS, I disagree that the 767 is not at all popular with passengers. Most of them wouldn't know a 767 if they tripped over one. Who said they would be using them internationally anyway?

Subsidies.

There has been word of tit-for-tat subsidies to counter the E.U. support for Airbus.

It's the Boeing and Airbus "How Low Can They Go" sale. (no rainchecks)

Another scenario

Whilst we are on the subject of rumours, try this one on for size.

BA want RR 767s back so they can sell ALL of theirs to the RAF for the tanker upgrade. This assists BAs bleeding bottom line.

That leaves QF short of capacity so QF gets some 777s currently under utilised by BA- again assisting with BAs bottom line.

Still takes delivery of A330s but with an eye to forwarding them onto Boeing within 12-18 monts.

Boeing also has cheap 777s available for delivery in the medium to longer term.

BA happy because bottom line looks good.
QF happy because it helps out 'Mother' and gets cheaper aircraft in longer term for similar priced A330s.
Boeing happy as they get nice order from QF and remains all Boeing until the A380 gets off the ground. Ace up the sleeve of Boeing remains the Sonic Cruiser which may yet trump the A380 in a few years time!

Just todays consipiracy theory!!

C of Borg

You are correct. A lot of pax would not know a 767. However they do know that the tired QANTAS aircraft with two aisles and less than 4 engines, is cramped, has less than optimum leg room and ****ty seats.

As for the 777. Unfortunately if you got the BA ones they are less than optimum. I understand they are all of the earlier variants with lower AUW and smaller engines. Good for Europe or domestic Aus but not all that flash for long haul across the Pacific. Get the 200 with 632,000 MAUW and 90,000 as side or the 300 with 660,000 and 98,000 per side and you will have an real aircraft. (you will also catch up to the rest of the third world)

Was QF ever thinking of using the A330s to go transpac? Aren't they just for 'regional' (ie. Asian) services? The existing 763s were doing HNL-YYZ but not any non-stops - BA do LHR-CPT, LHR-PEK, LHR-GRU and LHR-SFO all non-stop with their 777s so they must have some legs on them? Do QF want to use anything smaller than 744s transpac? Sounds like they're all into hubbing with AA rather than point-to-point... they had a chance to think about that when they could have gone for 777ERs...

With QF using B777 transpac the problem may be with ETOPS. Unless Boeing get the 207 mins approval QF may have problems.
Boeing are paying for Midway Island to remain open so the North Pacific ETOPS tracks remain.

Taildragger - I believe QF will be using the A330-200's for domestic initially followed by ops through to Asia when the numbers arrive.

As for the A330 going - I dont think so.

The only suitable B767 replacement is the A330 or the proposed B777 short haul variants that can do both short and medium range.

Ultimately a family of aircraft are ideal but it would have to be an amazingly attractive deal from Boeing to cause QF to back out of Airbus in the future.

Like anything else it will be ultimately politics and finance!
