Post Ansett F28's on the move

This morning the 4 F28's which have been parked up at Tullamarine for over 18 mths were being towed away. Engine runs on at least 2. The aircraft are FKI,FKJ,FKO, and EWD. Seems the administrators are starting at the bottom for the big sell off. The word from the gate guard was the new owners were Sydney based (one engines and one airframe). Anyone got any ideas where they are off to?

YOU ARE KIDDING?

Those F28's were protected by the National trust! They were going to build a theme park around them. They've been parked there for so long, they found Aboriginal paintings on them! Archeologists from all over the world were going to dig them up!

I believe that the owners of the airline, formally known as Ansett Australia, had buyers for them some years back, but thought the price was too low to accept. They remained parked there ever since. Oh well, at least they'll have somewhere to park the 763's!!!

Cool

Put in high density seating and sell them to Air Nuigini for petty cash.

Sell them to PX for petty cash?? Are you joking!!! PX ALWAYS pays way more than their aeroplanes are worth. In fact if you slide a few million USD into the right political pockets you may be able to get enough for them to refleet the rest of AN

Unhappy

Somebody who has access please give Echo Whiskey Delta a gentle pat on the rump from me.

I miss the old girl and the ground breaking days she and her sisters represent.

Enjoyed flying on her, despatching her and crawling around in her belly chucking bags and freight.SYD bags in 3 and overflow to 4. OOL in 1 and tranship in 2. 1500kg of live crayfish in 5 and the last 500kg in 6 - and she's good to go!

Fly on miss girl.I will try my best to follow your progress.

My last flight on EWD was MCY MEL - a shortened holiday when we found out that AN was booting all the ex EW positions and shutting us down. F/As had myself and my wife VERY full of champagne by the time we hit MEL.

The F28-4000 might now be considered an aviation dinosaur - but they made a real aeroplane noise and the crews loved the "sportscar" handling - and they felt solid. Nothing was better than hearing the whine of the Speys over the terminal as EW74 flew in from HBA on a crisp still morning to intersect downwind - green belly and yellow engine pods shining.

God bless all the girls for that matter - including the AN foxtrot Kilo reged A/C. What a wonderful aeroplane.

I agree EWL. Great old aeroplanes, just wish I had had the chance to fly one.

My last flight on the old girls was VH-FKI PER-BRM-PHE-PER. Last saw one in KNX in 1998. Think it was FKJ.

Anyway lets hope they continue to fly and not get cut up for spares.

It wasn't much fun being SLF in a monkey suit (as staff tend to do) on the PER-PHE run back in the early eighties! I was surrounded by smelly miners going up to work. They were passing beers all around me, & never offered me one! BA$TARDS!!!

Sadly, another piece of Reg's dream being dismantled.

EWL. I promise to give her a pat for you. I work just near them at the Jet Base....or.....I used to....(now I'm gonna cry!)

Sad to see the F-28 at the Knackers yard, did over 20 years on type, 10,000 hrs and only one engine let me down.
The sound of the Speys on a cold overcast morning was the 0605 wakeup of the Shire of Belmont WA for nearly 30 years.
The 3000, light, and on a cold day was the best fun you could have with your clothes on in the Airlines.
They were the cash cow of the "real" Ansett in the 70s and 80s in WA and served all well.
If you want to see some really sad ones go to JKT or SUB and see the rows of them in the graveyards along with Viscounts, F27s 748s and even some ATPs and a few DC3s
They are still going in many places including Thailand with PB Air, and Asian Govts have some lovely ones as VIP.

Farewell to an old friend.

You were indeed privileged.
You didn't have to live in Belmont either, I live in Nedlands (about 10nm on the other side of Perth) and if those Speys didn't wake you up when they were rolling, yup you could hear the bass rumble, they sure did on a R21 Donal or Gel Two departure and then there was the odd gunshot when the easterlies were in full bloom.
Mind you that wasn't peculiar to F28s I recall watching a B727 load of white and shaking pax disembark after a No2 stall and rejection.

A legendary aircraft in the development of the wild west mining, the early models like most in those days were really stretched over the long routes and turned the racing the fuel needles home into a real art. Which was turned into fine art and legend by Capt Rowell in a legendary met v fuel snafu.

Just as long as they didn't give you the seats down the back near the engines.

They ARE a bit too big to stick on a pole outside Perth Airport??????????????????, I'd donate a cuppla dollars and I'm sure the Mining companies would too. Anyone?

greybeard. How long did the 3000's operate for in the West ?. From memory they were leased/purchased by EW for the Norfolk Island run.

It is regretable but I think their future is a little bleak as the Spey's do not meet the stage three noise requirement and if my memory is correct the requirement to meet stage three is nearly upon us. I think this also impacts on the 2 F28's Flight West have.

One of my early jumpseat rides was from Brisbane to Mackay and return in EWB back in the early 90s. I remember coming back into BN and being told to keep best speed due to a 737 behind...on the ILS there we were doing 250kts as the f/o says watch this, full speed brake out, gear and flaps as the speed came back then the touch down. Taxi in and we were just parking as the traffic behind touched down. F/O said something akin to try that in a 737 and we would have left the wings back there.

Also had a few rides out to Norfolk in EWB in Flightwest form and on descent pulling out the speed brake feels much the same as driving along doing 120 in your car and yanking on the park brake, they were a great machine and i've never heard a pilot say a negative comment about them, sad to see their days numbered!

greybeard - EWF and EWG were the F28-3000 "Saudi" twins at Eeenie Weenie. They were both bought by EW from Saudia and underwent a huge refit at TMW including installation of manually actuated drop oxy mask system that was designed and built by the TMW Lames. They ran in 64 saleable seat config - the 3000 I believe is the power plant landing gear and wing of the 4000 on the 1000 fuselage. A total sportscar. The guys up front adaored them. Mike Rigg did SYD DPO chock to chock in 70 minutes one night - with one of my trafficies onboard. Entered downwind at about Warp factor 3 - washed of the speed on turn onto base an greased on in. My mate Lance came off white - all he could say was "we passed a 727 - Riggy told us where to look down for him and we roared past!!!" Never a hint of a brake release or landing weight problem but I think I do recall them having a small achillies heel with zero fuel weight - same as the 1000. I stand to be corrected though.

Buster - If you can get near Delta - please do. I just so miss the old girls. If anyone gets anywhere near EWB please give her a kisson the radome - that is what I did when she was the first EW F28 into DPO when they were introduced - and also the first one back after the '89 uproar.Nosewheel right on the dot both times. I know I know - but there in no judgement or agro in that statement. The girls are part of my life and those of many others. My sons are now 14 and 16 - but still remember their rides on the F28s - Uncle Nifty (Nev Maguire) on the flight deck and the eldest in the jump for a landing that he still talks about - and the fleet - they called Alfie Bruce Charlie and Douglas at that time.

Daddys aeroplanes have sadly left the building.

Best all

Certainly one of THE great Pilot aeroplanes of all time. I was blessed to do 2000 hrs in Air Nogat 1000s and 4000s.

My fondies,

11 minute sectors From Goroka(elev 5300') to Madang(MSL) through a gorge in the 12000' hills.

Waking up EVERYBODY at the Madang Resort at sparrows. The Resort was about 200 meters to one side of our take-off path as we passed through 300', at crackle power whether we needed it or not

Our SOPS called for Landing lights ON when the gear was lowered so when we came into Cairns of an evening and maintained 330kts 'till 8 DME on the ILS we would scare the crap out of ATCers, the Stealth Fokker they called us. 250 kts till 10?? pussies!!

Racing a checkie into Port Moresby when we managed to talk the Bros into letting us 'maintain own seperation'. We ended up wing tip to wing tip on 14L & R at 330kts/3000'/10DME/clean and neither wanting to pull the brake first. I blinked and he beat us to the parking apron but we won the foot race to the crew room

Better than some routes I've had!!

EastWest Loco,

Your posts are really inspiring...so good to hear someone talk about aircraft like that, and great to hear from someone who is genuinely interested in this industry. Your enthusiastic posts about KD on other threads are really supportive for someone like me who is currently twiddling their thumbs waiting for a recall.

As an aside, this thread in particular has woken up a youngster like me to the state of our industry. What on earth happened? 64 seat jet aircraft running into ports like DPO and BWT...we would never dream of it now. KD are presently struggling to fill a 34 seat Saab on these same routes. Something went wrong somewhere along the line.

Cheers,
TL

Thank you TL - I was the kid of 18 years of age when my old mate TJA- TAAs 1st 727 was retired. I went to AMD at Tulla to say goodbye to her and dumbfounded the lame who was giving me the tour of my old mate by opening the hatch and dropping the rear airstairs so I could see her inside for the last time. Still have the pic of me in the seat my Uncle Boomer Collins occupied so many times.

Also - the standard F28 config into DPO was 72 for the 4000 series - and later - despite and because of the takeover we ran BAe146-300 equipment through the port at 96 seat config - and embarassed the new owner with how well we did.

I am and will always be passionate about the airline I hung my heart on - and bleed for anyone in an airline they did the same for.Itis not a job - it is a lifestyle. If you dont understand that you were never the right person for the job in the first place.

Be well and win the battle.

Here, here, TL. It's good to see some genuine feelings to "the good old days" of Oz aviation. It wasn't all that rosey, but I still remember thinking; "And they're paying me to do THIS?!!"

AN never needed to take on DJ. They always had the option of resurrecting EW as a discount carrier. Known brand, good record & service. I even liked their last colour scheme!! What a pity we weren't running it

As an aside, I mentioned the topic of this thread to a colleague of mine. He was suprised to hear they were sold & being prepped for flight. His thoughts were that they were grounded due to their "airframe" hours?!?! Anyone in the know?
