What About That Soccer........
Amazed nobody has mentioned, that I could see, the Soccer (Football) last night?
Did you see all the advertisements at the ground for Qantas... (this makes it aviation related...
)
Congratulations to the Socceroos, in case anyone offshore has not heard, they beat Uruguay 1-0 in Melbourne.
Second match is in Uruguay early next Monday our time. IF they can win that, or draw, or even only lose something like 2-1, they will be into the World Cup Finals....

Good to see the size of the crowd to. Must have made all our phseudo aussie/euro players feel at home or away or comfortable, whatever...
Anyway it would be good to see them get through albeit be thrashed in there next game with a Euro team of some stature. I hope not but...
They didn't play that well on an international level and the South Ams were just *****.
Oh yes. There were alot of QF signs. How wonderful for the industry in these present times.

I believe a military flight is taking them home on behalf of their tax payers. Better or worse than cattle class??? I guess that depends on which airline your comparing it too huh.

*Uruguay to rush back star striker*
Uruguay is set to rush star striker Dario Silver back into its line-up
for the World Cup second leg qualifier against the Socceroos in
Montevideo on Monday.
Silver is recovering from a shoulder injury.
Gonalo Sorondo who plays with Inter Milan is also set to return to
international duty after a three month break.
Meanwhile, the Socceroos have just left Auckland on the long journey to
Montevideo.

Archie Thompson just scored his first goal for my hometown ( in Belgium ) last week. Nice kangoroo imitation he gave afterwards too.
Isn't he supposed to knock in 13 every game?

I can't believe how poorly they played. The only guy that seemed to be making inroads was Kewell. Emerton was just running round, should have been wearing a blue shirt. I feel sorry for the keeper, he had no help what so over from a totally out classed and out passed back line.
Overall when you take Australias performance in both these games and most in the past, we just can't seem to handle the world stage.
Aside from this, how is it just that some teams in Asia etc, obviously lacking in ability are in? Not to mention some of the European teams that are far better than our own, are out.
The qualifying tournament should be reassessed.

Any game that can be played for 90 minutes for a DRAW is doomed to failure in this country. Has anybody considered that this might be the reason Soccer crowds go feral with monotonous regularity out of sheer frustration ?
We have our own unique HOMEGROWN brand of football in AFL & I will not be abandoning that to jump on some bandwagon of European & ethnic origin. GO DOGGIES/ 02

Shocka, it's not always about the scoreline. Football is a game of skill which to this day is unmatched by any game out there that is played with a ball.
AFL is game that will never be played on a world stage by any means and is quite simply a pitiful bunch of nancies running round a paddock playing catch me with it's only support coming from our smallest state with some rouge outsiders.

what about our national pastime summer sport?
5 days for a draw.
makes soccer look like a fast fix.
i'm not a huge fan of the game but at least we beat the kiwis.
(where are you Girt?)
they gave it a shake but paid the penalty for not being able to put on the finishing touches.
plenty of chances but not enough goals. same as in melbourne last week. and in 97.

Ahh, shaablamm - thank you for that most erudite response - I fair dinkum laughed my a$$ off!!! To call AFL players nancies was just gorgeous - especially when you compare them to a bunch of poofs who spend more time rolling around on the ground 'in agony' than getting busy playing out their 0-0 draw.
By the way, champ, "our smallest state" doesn't actually have an AFL team. The same way our country doesn't have a soccer team!

I guess the real problem for the Socceroos is that soccer isn't the numero uno in Oz and our best players are never here to learn how to play TOGETHER! FIFA love screwing us around when we try to get 'em here & the european clubs try their best to stop them coming. (In fairness though, they pay big dollars for the players & lose them for weeks. We're just too far away.) Maybe direct entry from Oceania is the go! We will always whip them Tongans!!

to Uruguay in a second leg qualifying match in Montevideo.
Uruguay won the tie on aggregate scores 3-1 to take the last place in
next year's World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.
The home team took a 1-0 lead into half-time and continued its
dominance, netting two second-half goals to sink the Socceroos' hopes of
advancing to the finals.
The first goal came in the 14th minute, a long ball played in towards
Uruguayan striker Dario Silva.
He took one touch to control the ball and shielded it from Australian
defender Shaun Murphy before volleying the ball right-to-left past Mark
Schwarzer in the Australian goal.
Silva is Uruguay's top scorer in the World Cup qualifiers, but missed
the first leg in Melbourne after dislocating his shoulder days earlier
in the South Americans' final group match.
Substitute Richard Morales scored both second-half goals, with his
second coming in the final minutes.
Australia's best chance came just after the hosts had scored their
first.
A Stan Lazaridis cross from the Australian left was met by the head of
Harry Kewell, but Uruguayan goalkeeper Fabian Carini made an excellent
save low to his left.
Kewell had another good chance in the second half, but the Leeds United
striker put the ball a foot over the cross-bar.
Kewell's Leeds team-mate, Mark Viduka, also had a chance to score, but
was unable to control a header from directly in front of goal.
