A great laugh,firstly at the show and then DD's comments.
Have to agree though that "Flying High" (the movie) is the standard that all others should be judged by.
What a "classic" movie.

What a joke.!
I obviously don't have a sense of humour.
I was appalled at the way the presenter carried himself and presented the pfofessionalism of journalism to the world.
The punters are critical enough as it is without putting this dork up front whether it was a sim or for real. It does give me reason to believe that the presenter's sense of humour made a farse out of the now very strict security in the cockpit, it proved without doubt he likes the sound of his own voice and thinks he is funny, not. I'm sorry to say the insult to my inteligence was turned off after levelling off after takeoff as the presenter was dribbling crap way past the meter could tolerate.

CFI the lift lesson was a crack up.
Just curious, is Bernoulli's theory still tought as the reason wings keep planes in the sky?
I read an article a while ago that opened my eyes. Can't remember the journal however this site covers the main points:

May I respectfully suggest that you get the "Life of Brian" out on video, then relook at the show in that perspective, not quite as elegantly done but pretty good nonetheless.

Whilst their is some controversy over Bernoulli's work, it is still an easy (sic: lazy?) way to describe lift, and lay people can understand it. Having flown the Islander/Trislander I prefer the acoutic principle of the more noise the aircraft makes the more the surrounding airparticles are excited. This causes friction between the particles, thus generating heat which inturn reduced the airpressure. As the there is more air above the wing than under it, the wing is therefor sucked up. As you reduce the noise you are able to descend.
Alternatively some aircraft such as the Nomad and numerouse helecopters suppliment this design using the ugly theory of lift where the machine is so noisy and ugly even the earth finds then repulsive and a negative form of gravity is put upon such craft by the Gods of good design.

What an excellent show!
Brilliantly written and acted - I thought the Captain was played very well - their cockpit procedures were authentic and the F/A gorgeous.
When I was watching it, I pondered if someone would think they were actually flying or not. Thanks DD for proving me right <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
I thought one of the funniest parts was the reporter acknowledging the Captains 'checks' as the crew ran through the pre take off checklist.

Believe it or not, I do have a life and stayed up for the purpose of looking at a show that was going "to be worth watching"
As I also have an opinion.
The best part of the program was turning it off and going to bed.

Different strokes for different folks - a lot of people thought that "Seinfeld" was the bee's knees - I hated it! (Seinfeld - not last night's show, which I didn't see). <img src="frown.gif" border="0">
Funny funny stuff...
In particular, loved the explanation of Lift and the reporters replies to the Captains checklist items.
Anyone involved in this game who didn't find it funny for some reason or another has some serious issues.

Does anyone know whether P1 and P2 where pilots pretending to be actors or actors pretending to be pilots. If it was the latter, they certainly did a convincing job.

Fair comment and I do agree that it may not have come across as all that funny to the great unwashed out there and sadly there would be many who actually took it literally as read. Although being on the ABC there is some hope of a more edumacated audience.
I saw a similar one done recently on the Showjumping and Olympic horse scene which was equally hilarious as I have a brother in Law who is an ex Olympic rider and now Olympic and international Show jumping judge. The Jilly Cooper books are really true. But it didn't stop an equally furious uproar amongst the horsey mob. Quite fun watching the uproar really.
Interestingly "The Life of Brian" was actually banned in some countries including the US as heretical and blasphemous.

I did not want to go into a great explanation, however as I see my fellow ppruners as friends I will offer a small explanation which may explain my stance.
As I said earlier I like others was waiting for the program to air and stayed home and awake until it came on.
I was tired and expecting something a little different, however once I worked out what was going on, I said enough, turned off and went to bed as I was not in the mood to listen to the presenter carry on. NOT interested in a comedy routine.
On more of a reflective note, I have no problem laughing at myself as we do on pprune all the time. What concerned me though, was that the very audience of the show was probably many of the flying public who would see it differently then people within the industry would see it. [We can laugh at ourselves in send up.] The program was filmed well and truly before Sept.11th and I would have thought the way the aviation world is at the moment this show outside the aviation fraternity was not a good idea. I'm a great fan of flying high and laughed myself silly everytime I saw it, which was many.
Yes, I did take it as bad taste at a time when public confidence in aviation is at an alltime low around the world and I don't think the program reinforces the correct message to the travelling public, nor does any favours for the industry at a particulary vunerable time and I will admit that as I chose not to watch the whole program

Islander Jock they were indeed actors pretending to be pilots and what a fine job they did. The lingo and the mannerisms on the flight deck were all pretty much spot on. The flirting with the flighties seemed to be pretty accurate although some of us would have a better appreciation of that than others <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
Would have been interesting had it been the reverse! Pilots can't act can they? I've seen those cockpit videos...sleeping material after 10 minutes!!
