QF B747-238 @ YSTW in the '70s
Recently sighted a framed enlargement of a QF B747 conducting what appears to be a touch and go at Tamworth. Was advised by the owner that the Captain had elected to enthrill the crowd gathered at the ca. 1970's Tamworth airshow. Seems that it resulted in a 12 month suspension form fyling duties. Can anyone shed some light on these allegations. Curious only. Definately no insult meant to QF and/or its members. E mails welcome.. .Cheers,. .Aus'. .

Mate, I know the picture you are referring to. I am led to believe from a source in TW that it didn't do a touch and go, just a very low circuit with everything hanging out for the crowds, and then proceeded to Sydney.
But then again, I could be wrong.

I was at an airshow at Northam, WA in the 70's and recall a similar flypast.
It was outstanding. Very, very low with gear and flaps before initiating a go around, cleaning up and then a high speed run the other way. Curious to hear if there was any action by QF against the PIC. The aircraft apparently was full of passengers.
From memory, it was also a very sad day in that there was an accident involving a cherokee that went in after take off and killed three.

There has only been one case of any action taken against a QF Captain as a result of an Airshow, in the Jumbo era, and that was at Oskosh.
An Ansett Captain in the crowd complained to the Department of Changing Names that the Qantas B747-238 violated the 500 ft limit (that didn't apply to this Airshow performance, but what the hell, it's always open season on Qantas) during the flyby, and in all the best of Australia aviation tradition, there was a great panic in regulatory circles " that somebody must have approved somebody to do something", and they shouldn't have !!!
It was a pathetic little episode all 'round, and reflected no credit on anyone involved in the fracas that followed the "crowd complaint".
I'm pleased to say that it didn't stop the "offending" ( allegedly, he never did violate ANY rule, policy or approval, but why let the facts spoil a good witch hunt) achieving very senior rank in the company.
Tootle pip !!!

This made me think of the Russian that threw around an AN124 at Avalon a few years back. He got low & slow & ended up in trouble for it, but what a sensational display!!!

I know the picture well, it hangs in the bar of the Tamworth Aero Club. Having spent many a night there during the early/mid 90's it was often the topic of conversation. Older members of TAC referred to it as a 'fly by' and not a touch & go. I am also sure during the 70's the runway stength would not have coped, even today a 737 or all up FB-111 is about the heaviest that can use TW.
By the way, is the airport model complete with runway lights still on the underside of the table nearest the terminal? . .Disco Stu

The Tamworth and WA 'flypasts' were approved, from memory, and there were no repercussions internally.
At Schofields around that time, a foreign operators B747 did such a spectacular act that RPT a/c carrying pax were banned thereafter from displays. Certainly, to even think of the "D" word, you need the CP express approval in QF and it hasn't been given since [below 1,500ft at least.]
There is perhaps more to the OSH flypast debate which I'll fathom out before I die. Suffice to say I was F/O for the protagonist on his last line trip before returning to the halls of power from the 'sin bin' and he wasn't saying anything then or since.
Finally, it has reached the ludicrous stage that if you PLAN [note that word carefully] to fly past any public gathering you need an airshow approval. OTOH, if you happen to be flying past and observe a gathering below [not low flying or doing anything outside the CAR's in either case], that's quite legal. Thus, when we flew a warbird at about 2,000'AGL past a horse gymkhana in the Hunter recently on transit to Scone, we were legal, but if we'd TOLD them we were coming past; watchout!! Amazing stuff.
G'day

Voodoo Guru,. .That wouldn't have been an early Avalon, would it, the one where the airshow axis was at 90 degrees to the main runway, and the flyby axis was so far from the crowd line that anything smaller than a B747 was almost out of sight.
The TAA B727 flyby was a ripper, very fast, very low ( and very safe, the energy was at all time away from the crowd).
Check out the proposed new airshow rules CASA has dreamt up, we can't have the general public actually interested in and enjoying aviation, even for a few days every so often.
Who says CASA are directing their efforts too much to the famous "paying passenger", there's lot of other aviation to hobble.
Tootle pip!!
