Amazing isn' it.

With all the bad stuff going down everywhere there are still no lifes trying to rort the system to make money viz the arbitrage on the Afgani using whats left of the aviation business for comms.

So what? A b727 is just another A/C. Much hotter and heavier A/C are flown VFR.

Really ???

reminds me of the late Jordanian King who used to hoon along at low levels in the middle of the desert in his L1011 , this part of the planet however , requires 70t+ aircraft like the B727 or even the antonov vodka crates to be strictly IFR when on RPT flights.

(but then if there is no CAA/FAA in Afgahnistan then I suppose 350kts at 1500ft could be entertaining , where do I sign up ?)

If you read the report you will see the reference to VFR flying being in the Antonov between Kabul and Herat.

Dear Gaunty,
Just a few Afgan facts of life, from someone who knows the area rather too well.
(1)There is NO ATC in Afganistan, it is ALL Class G. No, I don't think Dick has ever been there, it's just the way it is, and always has been.
So there is no operational benefit of IFR, ( I follow roads, rivers and railway lines) and with few if any operational navigation aids, let alone ones you would trust your life to,the thought "get real" comes to mind.
Very high speed at low level is a normal way of avoiding small arms fire.
(2)There is often no communications with Kabul, even in "normal" times. Just across the border at Quetta, about 5100 amsl, 10nm safety height about 10,800, and DH FL 160 ( 25 nm safety height about 149)the uses of IFR are strictly limited. All just a trifle vertical, some routes have an MSA of FL280, I think a good time to use the Mk I eyeball.
(3) Surprising as it may seem to those who can't go anywhere without a "clearance", (somebody to hold your hand, at a price)it is only in the last two years or so that India has introduced Class E at high level, prior to that G of F. The only D/C in India is around a handful of major airports.
(4) The only mid airs have been in said "controlled airspace".
(5)Surprising as it may seem to the "only Australia knows how" brigade, airlines operate quite happily in the "dreaded G" in the UK, without bringing about the end of civilisation as we know it.

How about a Bex and a good lay down, woudn't want you to start having palpitations at the thought of what the rest of the world considers quite normal.

Tootle pip !!

LeadSled,
top post.
i put up the initial link because i found it interesting, not to pass any judgement. personally couldn't care less how it's done however, it must be a hell of a lot more interesting than flying BNE-SYD-MEL all day at flight levels.

Skyhawk XP,
you'd make a better proof reader than me. it is the antonov.

Lead Sled

I agree top post,
What I was on about, was that here we have a desperate country bombed flat by all and sundry, with no reliable comms, hence abtirage on their own currency is possible between cities only 100s of miles away from each other.
The only internal comms it appears to have is Ariana which from the article appears to be supported/controlled by those with the most bucks to arbitrage exchange rates against their fellow disposessed and desperate citizens.
My point being who needs enemies when you have friends such as these.
I see the cycle starting again all over.

This seems pretty standard from that part of the world. They are all farmers, they dont know their arse from their elbow when it comes to anything mechanical. When I was in China before deregulation and the only airline was CAAC we went on a couple of internal flights and they were on a B737-200 and a B727-100 and they were both flown single pilot. No crap, thats with out a word of a lie. The 73 yep but the 72 single pilot, thats a pretty good job.
