Is there a point?
With the industry at its current state, and me still trying to build up hours somehow, is there a point in actually trying to get a CPL and look for work??
Im seriously considering scrapping the whole flying side of aviation and looking into ATC. There is a shortage of controllers around Australia at the moment, and at least I can still live my dream in aviation. I really love flying, but I just cant see me getting anywhere for a few years now...Have to pay the bills somehow.
Any other views on this??

Lahso, Picture this..
You are sitting in Sydney Tower. .Year 2010,. .You've been doing it for a while now. Bit bored.
A young kid comes to visit the Tower. Must be only 20. Tells you that he just got a job flying a Chieftain out of Bankstown. "Jobs everywhere", he says. "Aviation is Booming so much you can pick the job you want"
"Oh great" you say. .He says "Yeah should be on a Dash 8 by mid next year!" "Qantas the year after"
Do you think..."Wow, thats great mate. Well Done"
or do you think,
"F@#*en Little Ar#@wipe Martha Focker" . . <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0">
What's your answer?. .If you truly love flying, and you give it up, you're gonna wish you hadn't when those good times come rolling back.... .-------------------------------------------------

ATC is full of frustrated pilots who if they had their time over would go flying.
Also there isn't a shortage of controllers - they are not recruiting as far as I am aware - the planned courses cancelled when AN fell over.
If you love flying enough you will find a way to make it work - if you don't you'll find an excuse to dip out.
Edit to ask why I am still on probation!

12,
I heard it put like this once.....
"Being an air trafficer is like watching your best mate have sex with your wife."
How about looking at the RAAF we are looking for drivers at the moment.

You either want a job in aviation or you don't. If you do, you will suffer most costs (not always financial) and pain to achieve what you want.. .A job in ATC is not a real alternative- IMHO

I started flying when i was pretty young and i always thought i would get somewhere fairly easy given my age, however, given that i was not particularly a financial wizard, the best i could do was CPL by the age of 24, and being the shy lad that i am, found it hard to walk in somewhere and say "I'm the man your looking for!". .In the end i found a school that i thought was willing to give me a fair go, doing an instructor rating and then with contract signed and all, 6 months paid work at an agreed rate. Turned out i was taken for a ride that lasted 8 months and still no rating. So after that experience i was turned off GA, i thought for good.. .Was lucky enough to land a job with AsA. For 3 years i got to see the other side of the fence that was always kind of a mystery to me. I was on a contract with them which ended about 2 years ago and ever since i've been working in IT. Very well paid. BUT.........!. .In answer to question above, my answer would be the 2nd option. . .So, this has given me the strength to try again, and this time i am sure i will have the courage to see it through. Yes i am scared ****less, giving up such a well paid and fairly secure position with one of Australia's top telecoms carriers sounds insane!. .4 words buddy. .Life is too short.

Hi All... .. .Thanks for all the honest opinions..I've decided to keep throwing money into the flying side of it, but I am still going to apply for an ATC position, after I turn 20. (Thats of course if they are still hiring/training). .. .Tumble-weed...I did apply for the RAAF, but got not backed with my year 12 results (They werent too bad and I did all the right subjects). It seems no matter how good your flying skills are, all they want to see is perfect marks. If there is another way in, I have seemed to miss it.

12-lahso, welcome to the real world (not being sarcastic here). . .. .You will come across all sorts of obstacles in your quest to fly, or any other quest for that matter.. .. .In my observation, success is a combination of the following:. . </font><ul type="square">[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Aptitude & Skill </font></li>[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Who you know </font></li>[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Being in the right place at the right time </font></li>[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Educational qualifications </font></li>[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Plain old fashoned luck </font></li>
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">and the most important of all,. . </font><ul type="square">[*]<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">NOT GIVING UP </font></li>
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica">Good luck

Oviously do what you think best but i do remember making myself a promise.......and that was never to wash a dish again (proffessionaly) after i got my cpl. This has worked well cos since then i have always had a flying job and over the last 20 years it hasn't always looked rosy. (A little presumptious as of tonight mid night - no job). I go with the previous post however....failure cannot cope with persistence.

pige,. .. .I washed plenty of dishes between my CPL and first job!. .. .Anyway, just out interest, I had a mate who just sat his ATC testing for the current intake. Quite hard apparently. 25 sat the testing day, not 1 passed, including an AN F/O and a RAAF controller!
