Web Page settings

Hi All
Not sure how to explain my question in a manner that can be understood, but here goes.
I am running W11, and use Firefox for browsing. Recently, when I open a web page, there are a couple of flashes as if the page is showing settings and then they disappear before the page is open; this happens so quick that I cannot see what is very briefly shown. Virtually all the time everything works fine, however there are occasions when I need to click on something or complete a question, and the displayed page is shaded, and I cannot proceed to carry out the required task. I have tried using MS Edge, and have no such problems, causing me to try the task first on Firefox, and then resorting to using Edge.
I have not changed any settings lately, but wonder if a setting has been changed when W11 updated itself recently.

Hope that someone can decipher the above!

As always, your help and advice is appreciated.........................

I use Firefox (with Linux) and don't have the issue you describe, however as a general fault-finding process I suggest:
  1. Disable any browser extensions you have
  2. Clear all cookies etc
  3. Open PPRuNe in 'private' mode

See what happens there. If the problem is no longer evident then it may simply be that a rogue cookie was at fault, but in order to be clear and methodical you should then enable the extensions one-by-one and re-run the test. Should the problem re-appear at one point then it could well be an issue with the extension you've just turned back on.

Otherwise if the issue remained after the above then I guess it could be something to do with M$, possibly your anti-virus prog, or PPRuNe (vBulletin), although I think that unlikely; if the former we'd need several people using M$ to have the same problem before considering it a possibility - and so far you're the only one to report this - and if the latter I'd have expected many others to report similarly, and for me to have the issue too. Maybe report your anti-virus if the problem remains so that others using the same are able to comment.

If you do pin-point what's going on it'd be useful to report back as it may assist others in the future.

FP.

Thanks for your reply.

This problem is not when I am on pPrune, but on other websites, which are various and I cannot honestly recall.

Thanks

Thanks, I wasn't clear on whether this was PPRuNe specific or more general, but either way I'd still go through the same process to see if the issue might be cookie or extension related.

If you do find a site that will regularly produce the issue it could be useful to post that here in case someone using M$ and whatever your anti-virus is can check it out for you.

Good luck, FP.

Hail and Well Met, gehenna! Using exactly the same OS and browser (both current) I have precisely the same inexplicable phenomenon. The "flashing boxes" appear and disappear in a fraction of a second. This only occurs shortly after an elective system reboot. Let's hope someone here knows whats happening.

Here are a couple of links which might prove to be of some value:

That happens to me too, at the same place in processsing. I assume something in the background is running commands and the flashing boxes are the command windows that disappear whenever that particular command completes. No clue as to who is doing it or what it is doing.

If you google "when I open a web page, there are a couple of flashes as if the page is showing settings and then they disappear before the page is open" you'll get a number of suggestions - the hardware acceleration one sounds promising

It could be a variety of things to be honest. Firefox has the ability to use various extensions and these sometimes update/work in the background or show some sort of activity depending on their purpose. Disabling those and having another go as suggested would be a good starting point. It could also be related to the way a website has been programmed to work, so if you can provide an example of a site where you encounter this I would be happy to test this on my end (Firefox user on both Win and Mac). If you encounter it after a reboot, it could even be related to Windows still adjusting itself in the background although that is unlikely.

Worst case it is related to something you do not want on your system. Have you had a go at a malware/antivirus scan to make sure it is not something from within that category?

Hello All

Thank you again for your help. I have to say that I am not that confident to change settings on my computer.
I have not had this problem for some days, and wonder if as cavuman1 described so well, one of those pages that flashes by gives the choice about cookies. With such a quick flash there is let alone no time to read what the page says or make a choice. Could this thought be possible?

Once I come across a page causing a problem, I shall make a note and post here.

Thanks for all your input.
