IT getting worse & worse.

Anyone else noticed how many things do not work these days ?
Just now had to complete a form online. Looks fine, but the things
one should click on do not work (PDF issue). Still I can type the URL
and login. Instructions state ID for login is top right of first page.
No it is not, it is buried in page 12 of 27. Eventually I can log in and
start to complete the necessary form, except I cannot, the fields at
the top of the form can only be completed after the one at the bottom has
been done. Is this a Covid thing ?

It's just too tempting to produce something pretty which seems to fit the bill and put it out with no testing. Like Mrs Jim got a Notice of Intending Prosecution yesterday (don't ask) and when she tried see what the speed camera showed it dumped her out because she missed one digit in the reference number.

Discovered that one of the grandkids, aged 20, was writing security programs for a major national bank during the summer break after first year Univ. training. Yes, really!

Not happy. Think I'll have a couple of harrumphs.

It is unfortunately becoming more and more common. Similar thing is when a site will only work with certain Internet browsers. I use Firefox all the time, but there are certain sites that won't work in it (even though it meets all W3C standards etc), so I have to use Edge for those, my daughters school monitoring site being one of them.

Same thing can happen with Safari on Apple kit -if you try to use another browser on Apple kit there aren't many, and they all use Safari's engine anyway as Apple won't let any others on, so if ithe site doesn't work in Safari you need to get something that isn't Apple....

Accessibility compliance is also pretty dreadful, the trend for "flat design" in various shades of grey has made things even worse. You do wonder what sort of testing these designers actually do!

I write process control code and associated graphics. It gets tested to within an inch of its life before it is released, and it infuriates me when website designers just sling crap together with obvious errors. I can't imagine why you'd NOT test your own stuff.

Accessibility/screen layout/colour/contrast is freqently ignored. There seems to be a fashion for making things near invisible on screen - a white cross against a light grey background etc

Why would this be a problem with the website or coding??

I'm not sure whether that is correct... you can install other browsers on an Apple device without any problems (such as Firefox or Chrome) and they definitively use their own internal technology. I use Safari and Firefox on a MacBook and I have seen enough examples to be sure that the two don't share a common browsing engine.
If you're referring to phones and tablets, that's a different situation. iOS browsers are indeed forced to use the WebKit framework and the iPad situation is no doubt similar. But phones and tablets are a more locked down system and examples from this article (from 2017) such as a website being able to access a camera, or a website that mimics an app's behaviour are most likely seen as significant security issues. Personally, I'm happy to let Apple prevent behaviour like this.

It's taken me about 18 months since I got my new PC to make the home page on Edge roughly what I want it to be. The fact is, there is only one URL that can be your homepage, but you can configure what that page shows.

Three examples:
I have had attachments that I cannot open in Thunderbird but are fine in my internet providers browser.
I had a warning that a website was dangerous, asked my colleagues & none of them had the problem. (Different anti-virus.)
I have had to usae windows explorer to download an mht file.
The list goes on...

My current moan is those sites that do not work with Firefox, or which require me to turn off ad blockers.
I will not turn off ad blockers. Get used to it!!
If I have to access the site, I will reluctantly use Edge.

I've just got a Smart TV after my 5 year old died. Can I watch telly? No! I can do a hundred other things but any concept of scrolling through BBC1,BBC2,ITV has been obliterated by hundreds of icons and apps and... ! And the picture is so shiny and garish! Grrrr

Plus the 3+ remotes non of which is labelled with any command that fits what you see on the screen -

Easier to get a 5yr old kid from across the road to come in and set it up...............

Sorry to hear about the loss of your child.... or was that not what you meant?
I am dreading the day when I will have to go and find a new TV as I definitively don't want a Smart one! With the current digital TV approach the set itself is relegated to the role of a dumb screen anyway, so I don't see the need for any additional capabilities there. Also, I definitively don't want anything Google related (read: Android) in my TV.

We have had our "Smart" TV for two years now. We've mastered most of the basics during this time, but nearly all the other crap which flashes across the screen is not wanted - and drives she who controls the remote control to come forth with language which embarrassing to endure. Of course the TV can't hear - at least I don't think it can - so I am called to fix. "What did you press?" can be asked, but the answer is that she doesn't know. I guess it's progress, but there are numerous times when I wish it was a little less smart, and not so insistent to offer me movies and a whole lot of other blatant entertainment suggestions which were not sought, will not be accepted, and are most certainly not welcome.

Ah yes, TV issues..... When BSB died and I acquired a Sky analogue receiver, a so-called installation expert came along to set it up.

The instruction leaflet clearly stated that before doing anything else, it was necessary to press the button which corresponded to the language you wished to use. But the idiot hadn't bothered to read it, switched it on and pressed '1'. Whereupon all the menus turned into Finnish.... He then spent the next 15 minutes trying to un-Finnish it, until I took the instruction leaflet off him and worked out how to reset it to English. "I'll take it from here, thanks - good bye!" was all I said....

Mine came from John Lewis and was delivered and installed by them, dreadful, they upended the box and lifted the lid off resulting in all the accessories etc dropping on the floor, then while fitting the mounting lugs to the back one of them dropped one, he picked it up, looked at it then was about to fit it when I asked to see it, he had broken one of the mounting lugs off it, I at that point rejected the TV….. this was a 4 grand TV… but what really rankled was the replacement, they for some reason “refunded me the 4K for the first TV” then took another 4K out of my account for the second, which meant for a few days my account was 8K down.
Last time I ever used John Lewis and never will again.
