Mr O. Yup, done the plug in mouse. Did all the uninstalling etc. No change...

Now trying to make up my mind over a laptop with docking station to connect to two screens etc or just replace the tired old tower unit with a new one. The prices are very similar.

Thinking about this, even though you reinstalled windows your pc would remember your previous settings by downloading them off the cloud, hence why it’s the same. Go start, (right click?) then device manager, find the mouse, open it and uninstall it, make sure it does not reinstall itself, it might reappear, if it does look in settings and see if you can do it there, then shut down and restart, it should auto detect the mouse and reinstall it, as you won’t have the mouse hold the power button and it should force a shut down.

Seem to remember I had a similar problem once. Must have been the spreadsheet so I Control and A, copied teh data and opened a new Excel file and Control and Paste the data in to the new sheet. Carried on fine with the new sheet.

it this is a laptop be sure to disable the touchpad. Occaisonally this happens to me and its when I've accidentally turned on the touchpad and my hand brushes the touchpad as I'm typing. On my Acer the fn-F7 key enables/disables the touchpad. Other than that I would suspect a stuck key.

oh, and run a virus check, Could there be some remote control software on the PC where somebody is driving you mad by messing with the mouse?

Sounds like a stuck key or maybe something stuck on the touch pad. Try prying the arrow key up?

I too would expect this to be a hardware problem. Have you tried another keyboard? Or just unplugging the keyboard and see if the scrolling stops? Whenever something like this happened to me I had a stuck key somewhere or some dirt or hair stuck in the optical sensor of the mouse. Alternatively, have a look and see if there are other input devices still active. I have also forgotten to switch off my mouse at times and if this then gets stuck between some stuff in my bag, I get strange things happening on my laptop.

Stoopid question I never thought to ask before - in a crowded office, what stops wifi/bluetooth mice and keyboards interfering with each other? Whilst I guess the working range is just a couple of feet, presumably there is a limit on the number of frequencies available or something so there must be a chance of two devices coinciding? Ie I've no idea how they work... I had two computers at work, each with a wifi mouse...

It is a channel and bandwidth issue, not a frequency issue, but they can interfere. One mouse is very much linked to its specific receiver though, and on Bluetooth they use a specific ID so that I cannot use my mouse to control someone else’s MacBook. At least, not without their knowledge and cooperation.

Thanks Jhieminga, think I understand that! I have two identical bluetooth speaker receivers linked to my laptop, upstairs and downstairs - only one can be use at a time sadly (used to have a master receiver/transmitter and four slave receivers which worked simultaneously so I could broadcast music wherever I chose in the house - this seems to be a rare thing and replacing it cheaply was impossible!)

Sorry for the drift...

If they're the same brand and not too old.... check whether that brand offers the option to connect them both at the same time using their own software or an app (https://hdmitechnologies.com/how-to-...akers-at-once/). Otherwise, SONOS appears to be very flexible, but not very cheap. I don't have any SONOS stuff myself as my house isn't big enough.

And back on topic....

I know you want at new computer, but the mouse thing . . . I'm looking at a naughty mouse on my desk. It's been there a year or so. It's a Logitech Laser mouse and was quite good, until it started spitting out pulses all by itself.

So, some software will respond to this stream, and other stuff won't. It would 'Pick' things uninvited and generally titter with glee at my angst.

I had a similar problem with a seldom used secondary work laptop mid last year. It wanted to apply the then latest Microsoft patches when I booted it up and after that the GUI went nuts with using either the mouse or the trackpad to scroll down. I put the laptop away and pulled it out few weeks later and there was another Microsoft patch for it. I installed it and the problem went away. I then researched the patch and found an obscure reference to this issue.

I believe the root cause of the problem is some registry setting that makes Windows go nuts with the pointing device, exactly what that registry setting is I don't know, best to just get the latest patches for Windows.

Bought a new pc then sat down to clear all the stuff off the old one in preparation for reusing the RAM and the SSD and binning the disc drive.

Started it up and the damn thing is working fine. I don't know whether to be elated or angry.

Now going to take the new pc back......
