What is it with this site??

Just what is it with this site??

In this day and age of multi-platform, multi-media, online sites why will pprune still not allow one to post a link to something on Farcebook???

C'mon guys, whatever the reason was to start with, isn't it time this site joined the 21st century in recognising the existence of other sites??

Frustrated

Thank you but I'm not sure what point you're making.

Every time I try to post something with a FB link in it, that link doesn't show up when I post it.

Regards

I guess the point PPT is making is that the site does accept links to Facebook as evidenced by his successful inclusion of a link to FB.

Are you able to see that link? If not, then the issue would seem to be with your browser. If you can see it, then there is perhaps a more puzzling issue with the browser when you use it to post.

Perhaps try a different browser? Perhaps tell us about what you are using to post and/or view - both OS and browsing program /app...

There has to be an answer.

Thank you FOR,

Yes I can see that link that PPT posted and it clicks through just fine so probably not a browser issue. (This is on my laptop using W7 and Firefox).

Years ago IIRC, PPRuNe blocked links to Farcebook and I, perhaps incorrectly? assumed that that was still the case. If so but that's now changed then I apologise for jumping to conclusions.

But I'm still bemused why the system refuses to 'show' links to FB when I was trying to post them. It was nothing dodgy or NSFW, just something about a gentleman who recently passed away.

Like you say, there has to been an answer but the more technically challenged of us can find it incredibly frustrating in working out what that answer is.

Thanks for the update CS, that's puzzling indeed ....

I think I'm also stalled at about this point:

I've run out of possibilities. I understand your frustration when confronted with a problem which simply shouldn't be there. Perhaps someone else can see what we're missing.

Best wishes,

Just an Idea

Are you using an add-on that blocks third party code from executing in the web page link that you are viewing in your browser - Face book links may being blocked as they are being hosted by a different server at your point of access.

No probs; Firefox/Win 7 Pro or Linux Mint 18.3/Epiphany for me - different units, I'm not running a virtual PC

Run your browser with any add-on's disabled as an experiment.

Daft question: Can anyone else 'see' the links in my posts above?

If so then, as CAT III says, it's probably an issue with something like Ad-Blocker, which I use.

Any help or further suggestions are much appreciated,

I can't - but, curiously, if I click the 'quote' button on your blank post (post #10) I can see the url you are attempting to post thus:

I have gradually truncated the link step by step here.

The links that don't work are those with 10156481041659101 in it. Who knows why? Pprune used to block a lot of sites. People worked around it with adding extra characters eg dashes, and adding instructions for those interested to remove them manually.

By the way, in many cases links work with the parameters chopped off. in this case everything after and including the "?". I have tested it and that seems to be the case here. The parameters are to do with tracking I guess.

As a work around you could perhaps quote the post yourself and then delete the original if you liked:-)

I'll immediately repost this "quoted" for comparison.

Strange behaviour indeed. The large number is most likely an internal Facebook identifier for a specific video file. I too would guess that everything after the '?' is to do with tracking and could most likely be removed, leaving a working link. But removing the video identifier will leave you with a link to just the general 'videos' tab on that page. That may not be what you want.

A lot of words to say that I don't know the answer either.... apologies...

More recent posts are most interesting. They show a way around the issue but, if anything, possibly point back towards the PPRuNe hosting infrastructure as being a contributing factor, although I've no idea why this should be - if in fact it is so.

I've just had a look at this thread using the Goggle Chrome browser - no Adblock there. However, that made no difference at all; everything appears the same as it does on Firefox, which has some ad blocking invoked.

The puzzlement continues ....

Take a breather for a few days guys,

Next Wednesday a new version of the software is being rolled out here with a dedicated team of techs on hand and waiting for issues arising. Perfect timing for problems to avoid sitting in a long queue.
