RIP AudioGalaxy
AG is the latest song-sharing site to get the same bloodey bullet that killed Napster.
Can anyone suggest another site (that hasnt been shot yet) which is as striaghtforward as AG was? Also would removal of the AG program off the hard disk be better accomplished through MS Add/Remove program, the AG Unistall program itself, or Norton Uninstall? Heard that its removal can screw up Windows if not done carefuly.
Thanks.
PS Im runnin W98SE.

Are you sure about that? Read on........
Several file sharing companies including Grokster, Bearshare, Limewire and Kazaa, bundled a product called ClickTillU Win, which several anti-virus manufacturers classified as a Trojan Horse. Their response? “We didn’t know!”. Neither Cydoor technologies, who distributed the Trojan to the file sharing companies, nor any of the file sharing companies, had performed even a preliminary insection of the software to see what it did”.
For Privacy activists, the worst file-sharing company is probably Kazaa. Though Audio Galaxy came with the Gator Offer companion, users had the option of not downloading it. Kazaa insists that its users download its partner programs, which in the past have included NewDotNet (which sells Domain names but also causes crashes and Net connection problems when installed.) SaveNow (Fully blown spyware) and Cydoor ( which displays ads and causes pop-ups) all worrying programs according to privacy activists.
If you downloaded Kazaa this year, you might have also installed software used to create a kind of private peer to peer network (with other Kazaa users) called Altnet, which is run by Brilliant Digital. They want to use peoples private computers to process and serve the advertisements to other people, effectively laying the bandwidth cost of providing advertisements on the users of Kazaa…………..
If you are now starting to feel worried, check out www.ad-aware.com Alternatively check the net for the hacked version of Kazaa without the offending program attachments, its called Kazaa Lite.

Kazaa, & spyware etc.
Have a look at this site for an opinion on Kazaa and others.
http://www.aluminumstudios.com/spyware/
I suspect they may have a point about some of these file sharing operations. I seemed to have downloaded an advertising "something" when I looked at Audiogalaxy.
There is a thread here about it if you search back.

Bugga me! Now I've got worries about Kazzaa, as it's what I use! Can anyone tell me, if I have ad-aware, will this fix the problems associated with Kazzaa mentioned here? Ive got it on the lappy, but not on the PC which is where I do my file sharing thingy from.
A side note to all that and far more importantly, Slash it's really great to see your words in the puter again. Must admit, with the bits and pieces of information you've been able to give us, it leaves the impression you've been through hell and back mate, and you usually don't mince your words
If physically unwell, I hope you are getting better every day.

Try this: GROKSTER
E.g. I just checked and Grokster presently has 1.47 million users online, who are sharing 252,144,000 files that total 1,799,040 Gb !
Nb. When you install it say NO to ALL the ad-ins that it'll prompt you to accept (that is unless you want them).
Nb. The application uses the same interface that the 'original' Morpheus used to use before it got involved with Gneutela and went down hill big time (imho).
Enjoy !

I'm really sorry to hear that you've been through such a difficult time Slash.
I hope you'll be feeling better soon, both physically and psychologically. If you want to have a shoulder to cry on or whatever, you have my e-mail.

Commisserations on the death of your mum Slash. You've certainly had a torrid time of it mate. Hope you heal up quickly, with no major lasting damage. I know that houses ain't easy to come by in your corner of the planet, but its ultimately replaceable as is yer lappy. Life isn't replaceable mate, so I'm glad you're still alive, if not perhaps exactly kicking up yer heels.
Get well soon mate.
Did your housemate get out okay?

Slasher, know how you feel re death in the family and you weren't there.
As for your little hassles. A house can be replaced, you can't be. Take care of yourself.

Commiserations Slasher, and genuinely so, from somebody who hasn't always seen eye to eye with you. Fate can be a real bastard sometimes, and you've had a nasty run of luck. The death of a parent is difficult at best, horrendous at worst, and often something we are left to deal with ourselves.
I join with the others here in hoping there's no lasting damage to you personally from your other misfortunes, and wish you a speedy return to JB.

Umm, now where were we? Oh yeah, music thingies.
I just had a look at Grokster and was surprised to see it listed Windows Media Player as a system requirement; can that be right? I've used WMP for the last couple of years, and as a multi purpose player it was the best imo, but I'm sick to death of it's latest incarnations deciding what I can and can't do, especially when it comes to ripping. I will keep it for mpegs, but I'm on the lookout for another music player, and I'm immediately suspicious of Grokster.
For making mp3's out of WAV's I have just downloaded FreeRip; ripping is all it does, and all it promises to do; simple and very effective. Highly recommended.
I suppose I might finally have to give in to Winamp for a player.
