iTunes messed up
Following the latest update my iTunes has been completely screwed up. I hold all the media on my NAS drive and this is set as the default library. Now though I can only see the tracks I ripped off CD's years ago and nothing I have ever downloaded. Also lost visibility of all the apps we have accross numerous ipads/phones/pods. A bit of investigation on the new look led me to an icon in the upper left which is a music note in a box. When you click on this it shows two options "This Computer" and the name of my NAS which has a check symbol against it. However when I click on This Computer it goes into a mirror version of iTunes which appears to hold its stuff on the macbook's drive. When I revert to the NAS option and go into the store, it gives me an option to redownload everything I previously purchased (music/apps). Trying that it does download, but not to the default NAS library, they go into the mirror one. I have checked in Preferences and it definitely is set to the NAS path.
How can I permanently disable it using macbook drive for any media or App ?

iTunes, like many pieces of software from many manufacturers was never intended to be used in a shared-storage environment. Instead the intention is that you back-up to external storage, but you leave the default storage as is.
Now, that said... what you'll need to do is force iTunes to believe it is using local storage (with the obvious disclaimer that this is at your own risk).
On OS X, what happens is that each new user created on the system has its own directory under the /Users directory. Apple then follow a standard path of ~/whatever for key folders such as Pictures, Music, Library etc.
So in your case, what you'll need to do is to enumerate the locations where iTunes stores its data and then symlink the local directories to the NAS directories.... i.e. ln -s source destination
Of course if you had a separate OS X server box then your life would probably be a little easier as I believe OS X server allows for remote home directories.

Ah, 1983 that explains it. Every Apple Macintosh will come with a network connection and they won't ship until next year.

Apple bashing is never pointless, particularly in the case of iTunes which is still a mess.
With Windows this would be a simple right click > map network drive but of course OS X exposes only the essentials to the end user...
Mixture is right, symbolic links are the way to go. But be careful to always keep a connection to your NAS!

I'm not sure it is Apple bashing to point out that Apple makes choices about what it tells morons like me.
I understand why it keeps things secret, but I have suffered an ill-informed purchase because of it. I bought 32gb when Apple didn't tell me that it had removed compression stuff, so I should have bought 64 or more................and there is no way of changing 32 to 64, and no exchange possibilities.
It tells me less about its products than others, and because I am a moron, I do not ask.
So my Ipad Air is not capable of doing what I want it to do with my piccy storage, as the spec is so different from the ipad 2, which did what I wanted it to do.
Er, but BT does what I wanted it to do, for free, and I didn't even ask for it.!!

That is exactly the reason why many manufacturers, Apple included, decide to store stuff in local storage.... because when you are dealing with home users you cannot really be too certain about how reliable access to external storage is going to be !

As noted on an earlier thread, Apple changed the spec on the Air, and didn't tell anyone. Especially not home users. And few of their own techies.
They certainly did not tell their UK/Ireland techie help line, who spent a couple of days being unable to figure out the problem. They had to talk to Calif to figure it out.
And my contact in Austin, the "Americas Operations Center", asked the (fewer) techie people in Austin, and they had not heard of it.
It is not a bashing of any sort. However, if someone in a shop had told me that the Air would not do what the 2 does, I'd have bought the bigger one. Now I am stuck with something that does not do what I want.

So product spec change, yah boo sucks... happens all the time in the IT industry ....either deliberately or accidental.
I suspect if what you say is true, in Apple's case its probably inadvertent, maybe some code accidental regression somewhere ...as it seems like an odd deliberate change.
Anyway, point being its not exactly difficult to batch compress your images before loading them onto the iPad....so you do have a viable workaround to you if selling on Ebay and replacing with a new one is not an option.

Software is up to date. Calif told UK/Ireland that the change was deliberate. Removal of compression for piccies.
I looked at batch compression but to do that I need to keep two sets of records or files of many thousands of pictures. On my master set. I have enough trouble organising one clean set, so I don't want to have to manage two sets.
My only point is that I wish they had made it public. They did not do so. As a regular punter I lose out due to their secrecy.

I might be a performance issue. The decompression may have been determined to be too slow to meet their performance goals when for example flicking through a few photos. Perhaps just a marketing decision?
I do not really understand the precise issue, and please do not take the time to explain it to me:-), but I noticed the following and thought it might help.

iDownsize allows you to take along your entire photo repertoire - wherever you go.
Would be no good if iTunes simply re-synched the altered files though I don't suppose.

Thanks for that link. Good idea but I won't go down that route as I will end up with 2 versions of many thousands of pics. I have trouble keeping one version clean!! I do not want to delete the originals.

At least simply can change the Covers on his table mat.
Seriously, take it to an apple shop. They will want lots to change it, but get them to file it as a battery problem and you get a new one for ukp80.
