Here's another Win7 query for all to ponder
Like a good chap I run in standard user. I want 'speedfan.exe' to run on start-up. I have followed every google 'tip' I can find including Scheduled task and all users Start up group and it does not run at start-up.
Apart from turning off UAC, how do I crack this?

Since you know your way around the task scheduler, look for a box in there called something like "run with high privilege" and tick it. Also, set the trigger to "at startup" and then tick "enabled". I could root out more details if you want, but there are enough keywords here for Google to help you quicker than I can at the moment.

Thanks, BF - I'll work through those, but I think I tried them all. The problem comes when I finish the T Sched and it asks for password to go with user and then kindly informs me I do not have the necessary privileges!
I really only want it for temperature monitoring on a new-build machine so anything that does not invoke admin would do. It just seemed ?simpler? to use S Fan as it came 'bundled' with mobo.

Did you try the last link? Can you run the shortcut without getting a UAC prompt? If so, then you can just drag the shortcut to the startup folder.

I gave up on that eminently laudable attitude, and run the PC with me as Admin. I know the risks, and choose to take them. It's not been a problem so far, and all the stuff I want to run does so when the Task Scheduler says it should...
Bit like running the iPhone jailbroken - I know the problems that might bring, but I need it to run (proper original) WiFiFoFum and Mr Apple decided a few years ago to stop allowing me to do so. I don't have any of that rooting compound installed, and nobody else gets to install stuff, so I reckon it's my choice to accept the riskette.
Interestingly, Apple got someone to produce a "new" WiFiFoFum which does something completely different (and useless to me).

Yes, BF, tried that. I also tried the M$ Application Compatibility Toolkit which did not seem to dent it. Like Keef, I feel the only way to defeat this stupid system is to run as admin. Why do they make it so hard?

BOAC, suggest that you create a local user with admin privs, and then use it only for running that scheduled task. Bear in mind that Speedfan needs admin to do anything, most of the readings won't work otherwise.

Yes, that would work, but how can I then boot into the required (non-admin) profile with SF running?
Interestingly, I now find this am thta perhaps the M4 allplictaion programee had worked. I can now run Speedfan a s non-admin user and it runs at start-up. So somne success! BUT......bringing with it a new problem where it no longer 'sees' my drives which it did before all this.
Run via the admin account it does see them all.

What I mean is that you should create a scheduled task to run SpeedFan on login, when you login to your standard / non-priv account. This scheduled task should be set to run under a different account that has administrator privileges (which you should make under "local users and groups"). EDIT: Got the task 'accepted' under admin user, set to run on logon/any user. No display of values seen, although the Notifications list shows all the required readings. Not shown as running in Task Manger either, but appears to be!!??
EDIT 2: Works as per when I start in admin user. However, in non-admin user I notice I have two Notification listings for Speedfan, one ithout hard drive data and one with, but still nothing in sysytray or on screen. Driving me nuts! I still think running as an admin is the best answer to protect my sanity.

Because the task isn't running under the user you're logged in as, it won't show in Task Manager unless you tell Task Manager to show tasks from all users (button at the bottom of the processes list).
As for the rest... not sure what you mean by notifications list? Perhaps try a restart?
By the way, a simpler method might be to forget the whole scheduled task thing and just copy a shortcut to the Start menu Startup folder (as other posters already said), and then under the properties of that shortcut, say to always run with administrative privileges.
You will probably get a UAC warning every time you login but it may work better.

Para 1 - that was simple! Yes it is running under admin user. Doh!

Para 3 - as we used to say in the Saturday morning kids cinema eons ago - "this is where I came in". I sought to avoid the UAC prompt by having it start on its own - simple, thought I......... It is no problem doing it via the Start folder- apart from the UAC prompt.
