SpeedFan won't work properly unless it is run with admin privileges
- aha! Thanks for that - that explains that. Will give your plan a go.

EDIT: Got the task 'accepted' under admin user, set to run on logon/any user. No display of values seen, although the Notifications list shows all the required readings. Not shown as running in Task Manger either, but appears to be!!??

EDIT 2: Works as per when I start in admin user. However, in non-admin user I notice I have two Notification listings for Speedfan, one ithout hard drive data and one with, but still nothing in sysytray or on screen. Driving me nuts! I still think running as an admin is the best answer to protect my sanity.
