AVG search engine

I'm about to dump my last installation of AVG anti virus still in one of my desktop machines. It doesn't get a lot of use (in the shed) so last night when I turned it on I saw that AVG was doing it's update by itself - as it usually does. Nice program!

However when I finally got back to the machine I found myself on a new home page for the AVG search engine, and all possibilities for Goggle had been pushed to one side. This change was not requested or authorised, they simply did it as part of their 'service' Bad Program!

This creeping intrusion of programs installing unwanted software reaches new depths with this event.

Farewell AVG, you've gone too far this time!

They are certainly getting quite naughty.

My update to AVG 2014 went through a couple of weeks ago. Near the end of the installation, the usual message came up with a small paragraph of text followed by two tick boxes each next to an option "load AVG ***" where *** is some AVG "service". Since I didn't want either, and the boxes were empty I started to click on OK at the bottom of the page to finish the update. Fortunately, just before doing this, I noticed a third tick box, on its own, above the text. Because of its position away from the other tick boxes, it could easily be missed.

I thought no more of this until reading this thread. I cannot remember whether the third tick box was pre-filled with a tick or what the option was but it could well have been the reason behind the appearance of AVG Search on the OP's computer. I do know that SWMBO fell victim to the same thing. (The search program was easily uninstalled in the normal way via Control Panel).

I have always been very happy with AVG. However, if they continue to use what seems to be underhand tactics, I (and I am sure many others) will start to look elsewhere.

AVG be warned!

I used the control panel / unistall option in Windows XP (Yes I am watching the calendar ). It looked authentic because I received web pages from AVG asking why I was uninstalling both AVG and their nice new toolbar (?).

Messages at the end of the process assured me that everything AVG was gone. Avast was duly installed and assumed it's duties as expected.

I've yet to check on the machine this morning (coffee not yet kicked in), but I'll wander out there when this happens in the expectation that all is well ....
