Well, I got my 'pi and the pre-loaded card with Debian OS.

I don't know what I don't know yet but;

I have a portable telly and/or a Commodore computer monitor, both with composite video inputs, both fail to display in colour, both show the picture so far to the left hand side of the tube that the start of every line is missing.

In the MagPi Issue 2 page 9, it says if your picture doesn't fit the screen try changing aspect ratio. No indication of how or where you do this.

Any ideas? Ta.

Also, in the Element14 getting started .pdf, just after it tells you how to login when the 'pi boots up it says "now you can set the clock", just like that, no suggestion how. I got as far as "man hwclock" and the hardware clock commands are displayed but none of them work, I get a message that makes me think that the hardware clock is not implimented on the pcb. The toolbar on the graphical UI does attempt to display time. Is this displayed time just a SW virtual clock? Is there a hardware clock? How should I set the clock? I also did "man time" and the info said that "time()" should return something useful but what happens is "sintax error at or near to )" or something like that.

Again, any ideas? Ta.

My embedded linux friend, who is going to get me going with programming, has just gone to the US for a couple of weeks, so please take pity on me, got my 'pi and I wanna play!

Thanks,

Rans6.....

Firstly, get yourself over to RaspberryPi.org and join the forum. Lots of information and very knowledgeable people there. Several of the original developers of the RPi are active members of the forum.

One particular topic to look at there is this one : Raspberry Pi • View topic - Commented Config.txt. This topic covers the config.txt file that lives in the boot partition of the SD-card. This has settings information for video output, amongst other things.

No colour usually indicates a mismatch between the video format being output from the RPi and that being expected by the display. I.e. output is NTSC and TV is PAL or vice versa.

The other settings to play with are those for overscan.

Ta.

I sorted the video issues for my old telly but find the interleaving causes the display to jiggle a bit. On the old monitor it still displays in monochrome only.

I have just signed up to the raspberrypi.org forum, perhaps when my registration comes through I will find the help for the other issues I am now finding.

I don't think the Pi has a hardware real time clock. However, I believe it should pick up time off the network when connected.

Correct Shandy52, there is no real time clock on the RPi, it gets the current time using NTP from the Internet. So clearly... if there is no Internet connection, the system will default to the earliest time support by the system. This will vary depending on what distribution is being used.

Version 2.0 of the board has a header to which a third party RTC can be attached
see Upcoming board revision | Raspberry Pi

V2 should be shipping by now - at least some CPC/Farnell customers have been getting them, I believe from their UK production line

Not going out this weekend!

My 2 Maplin Pi Kits arrived today - I was out so I'll have to go and collect from courier company (easiest option)
I can't see the grass getting cut or car getting washed this weekend!

I believe Maplin are still getting Chinese ones from RS Components
It will be interesting to see if any noticeable difference appears in actual use between the those, and those sourced from CPC/Farnell

doesn't matter where you get it from, but whoever it is will be sourcing them from either CPC/Farnell or RS Components
They are the only manufacturers at present

Milo
Correct, my board is B1.0
Use cat /proc/cpuinfo in Terminal window to get results:
MODEL AND REVISION................................................CODE (s) - hardware revision code
Model B Revision 1.0.....................................................2
Model B Revision 1.0 + ECN0001 (no fuses, D14 removed)....3
Model B Revision 2.,0....................................................4, 5, 6
My opinions of Maplin:
Ordered 2, paid for 2, 1 delivered, no Pibow cases
Email saying Pibow cases following 1 day later
Phone call to Maplin, apology, checking warehouse, 2nd in post same day, expecting it to arrive Mon/Tue.
2 Pibows arrived.

Ordered from Maplin on 03 Sep, delivery of 1st on 27 Sep.

Ordered from RS on 04 Aug, chased with phone call and told expect sometime in November!

Now that I have a board to play with, I'll probably end up upgrading the boards at a later date to get the latest versions.

Fair play to Maplin.
I arrived home today to find that Royal Mail had tried to deliver a package from Maplin (same description as first RasPi)

2 PiBow cases arrived in Friday.

MPEG & VC1 codecs arrived today via email.
Amazon have shipped mini wifi keyboards.

All is happy.......

had to pay a visit to CPC today (to buy something else) and they have the B model kits in stock (with the preloaded memory card and transparent case), but not the bare boards

Got mine, as promised by Maplins, last Friday; postie left it at the door the box arrived a day later.
The hardest bit was getting the box together until I noticed the etched numbers.
Working on BT FON it seems much faster than my old laptop.
Back to the 70s and some simple programing in order. At least it'll keep me out of the pub for a few evenings

My 2nd Maplin is a Model B Rev 1.0 Code 3
Delivered earlier this week.

I've also found code to remove the Windows script from my ZTE MF622 3G Dongle and recode it for Linux.

(I've already got the windows backup for the internal flash drive to re-code it for Win as/when required)

I've yet to test it this weekend, but the problem I thought was going to be my biggest hurdle (porting 3G to Pi) was one of the simplest to solve.

If all goes well I should have a fully www-capable PC in the car by the end of the weekend - only the purchase of a 12V cigarette plug to go!

3rd board from RS still nowhere to be seen!

Electronics kit arrived to play with - I might even have to buy a 4th Pi to use with it - I'll go to Farnell/Element14 to ensure speedier delivery.
