Help my computer to make noise!

Long story short, I got a new motherboard to replace a duff one - new model because the dead one is no longer available. Rebuilding the machine and everything is fine except for the audio - everything looks like it's working but there's no sound coming out!

Any ideas gratefully received.

Mobo is ASUS Sabertooth X58 running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
It has an on-board sound card, a Realtek HD chip - I've not come across one of these before but I've set it to AC'97 in the BIOS because I don't have any special sound hardware.
Unlike other Realtek stuff I've seen the new board doesn't seem to detect when something is plugged into one of the jacks.
Speakers are plugged into the default jack and levels are set appropriately but no sound comes out.

Any ideas welcomed.

Sounds like you have the wrong driver if it's:

a) not playing sound, and
b) not detecting the speaker inputs etc.

I'm intrigued as to what the choice is amongst in the BIOS for you to choose AC'97? as it sounds like W7 might have just chosen a generic driver for the card based upon what's presented to it by the BIOS choice.

I'd:

1) Investigate whether other choices in the BIOS provided a different result
2) Investigate the ASUS website for the correct driver:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Sabertooth X58
3) Try plugging the speakers into other ports and see whether you get anything

Did you load the Audio drivers from the disk that came with the Mother board?
Go to Control panel system/system devices/,see it 'Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio' is there, had similar probs once and it was the UAA Bus driver that was missing, had to download it from somewhere.

Wot Mike says re AC '97. Also, if you're using the front panel connectors, the pinout on the header socket for AC '97 differs from the pinout for Realtek HD (same pins, different order). So check you're using the right header connector on the cable to the headphone jacks. Also that front panel type is set correctly in BIOS.

Some Realtek audio chipsets aren't intuitive: if you're using two-channel audio or AC'97, you connect to line in and out rather than mic in and speaker out.

Personally, I'd just download the Realtek drivers. The Realtek Audio Manager is useful.

Have you checked the mixer to make sure that the sources or outputs are not muted?

As above, especially the try the other ports bit. Dunno if dxdiag still works on latest windows as an easy way to test. We are talking about connecting the ports on the motherboard in the I/O panel aren't we, just in case you have wired up wrong to front ports ?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sadly I've now tried them all...and a few others probably best described as clutching at straws...all to no avail. The thing still just sits there in silence.

To answer a couple of questions arising from my original query. The BIOS setting is for the output for front panel sockets. Doesn't make any difference whether it's HD or AC'97 - nothing comes out.

The various drivers appeared to set up different outputs - at least made different devices appear in the mixer. Even those which showed speakers (as opposed to SPDIF) indicated that the speakers were not plugged in. Strangely, using the Realtek driver the Audio Manager showed the rear sockets 'greyed out' - but even though the front panel sockets seemed live no sound came out.

I think I've spent enough time on the darned thing now! It's too much trouble to send the thing back - and I can't help feeling it's more likely to be something I'm doing than a fault on the board - so I think I'll try some cheapo soundcard or USB adaptor.

But thanks again for the ideas.

I take it you've had a look in 'Start-->Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound-->Manage Audio Devices' to ensure W7 hasn't pointed to a different audio device such as the HDMI audio output on your video card

Sounds silly, but; have you ensured the jack plugs are fully in ? occasionally the plugs don't always slide fully home.

Thanks again for all the help.

An update for anyone who cares. I tried all of the usual things....and a few creative ones....and not a dickie-bird. Whilst I'll admit to being a bit geeky and do enjoy beating the machine, the this afternoon I decided I couldn't justify the time I was spending playing with it (OK, I had some help in making this decision!) and went out and got the cheapo card. It installed beautifully, albeit the instructions didn't help much, and makes a perfectly acceptable noise. And it cost less than sending it back again.
