UK Government promises internet for all.
I read today that all properties in UK will have access to the internet at 2mbps by 2012. Am I reading this right? 2mbps???
I am using a dongle at 7.2mbps NOW and in March the whole country (Scandinavia) gets 50Mbps on a dongle.
I understand that speeds up to 100Mbps can be achieved here already.
Why is the UK always light years behind the rest of the world?

I don't think that even our govt would promise 50 - or even 8 Mb to Invercockileaky and Piddletrenthide and everywhere in between. Not everyone lives within 1 km of the exchange, afaik?
Ok, most of us are better than 2 already - but just monitor these posts and you'll see that some struggle even for that.

British government, as usual, not funding and investing into industries while other countries and foriegn companies are jumping ahead.
2mbps is a complete joke, especially since companies like Virgin are bringing out 50mbps, what speeds do you expect them to reach in the next couple of years?

It's about time us 2nd class citizens who live in the country got a decent service, the gov. must force cable companies to cable up the villages so we have a choice of supplier to give a decent speed. I struggle with streaming video at times and my download speed comes in at about 6.5-7megs.
BT offered to cable the whole of the UK if they were allowed to stream TV, Maggie said NO she wanted competition

Would this be the same Government that promised no more boom and bust, enough helicopters for our troops, that our country was better placed than any other to meet the recession, no more building on flood plains, enough "Green" renewable energy to enable us not to need nuclear or to buy in from abroad.....................................

I think we all realise its a bit of a meaningless promise until of course you live deep in the country and are still on dial up.
Rather than running optic cables down every road would not a connection by wireless to your home desktop be better using something like the mobile phone network only with greater capacity??
There is an office near me that connects its computers across the county by its own direct microwave data link dishes.

... or is it cheaper to build cellphone towers?
A couple of countries I've visited which were err, late, in producing a countrywide phone network seem to have decided that it's too expensive to lay copper or even fibre, and gone straight to universal mobile phone connectivity. Certainly my cellphone never showed less than 4 bars even in mountainous regions - most impressive.
Is this the way to go? Is there enough bandwith out there for fast internet connection by cell for everyone? Someone know?

!!!! Why do we pay tax?!?! bigger problems for them to worry about like taxing all the 4x4's off the road then planning on giving them money as a bail out, because suprise suprise, no one wants to buy 4x4's any more! Stupid government, the sooner i emigrate the better! Im not normally angry! honest! just think that the internet is the least of the problems right now! i live in the sticks anyhow and have good network speed!

Get ready for a new tax! Get industry to fund most of this then HM government can bring in a new tax on all properties. You mark my words! They are always looking for new ways.

I'm going to end up buying a jeep, have you seen the state of the roads? If you aren't driving over 3ft deep holes, you're hitting speed bumps, being slowed down by road works that never seems to happen and fuel and car tax that continue to rise...
