Post NTL - Good or Bad ?

Anyone any experience of using NTL for £15/month 0800 access ?

I am about to sign up with them, having heard almost all positive comments from friends.

My only concern is the inclusive £15 calls have a 5p 'conection charge', so a peak rate 1 minute call is 8p etc ... a bit of a rip off. Its different to BT where they have a 'minumum connection charge' ....

I am more concerned with the level of the ISP service .... Connection speeds, attempts to connect, etc etc ...

I presume it is locked to your nominated home number and cant use 0800 from another phone line ?

I switched to NTL last month having got totally pi$$ed off with Freeserve.

So far there have only been a couple of times when I couldn't connect due to tech problems, but since they give you an 0800 number to call to check server status, you know whats going on rather than being kept in the dark.

It connects first time 99% of the time.

I've not been billed yet, so can't comment on that aspect.

My wife is on the phone when I'm not on line so short call are definately NOT the norm!

As for connection speeds, it is usually 45333, ocasionally 46667, but never less than 40000.

Hope that helps.

I've been with them scince they started and I've found the service to be generally fairly good.

At times the speed can be lower than Cossak has experienced, but most of the time it is not a problem.

Any inactivity over a certain time (like reading a long thread) will result in being disconnected. This can be annoying so to combat that I have got into the habit of hitting the browser back button and then the forward button immediately every few minutes.

Hope this is of help.

Call connection is less than that I think - about 3.5p but I'm always below £15 per month so its no matter.

Don't know about connecting elsewhere.

For me, internet connection has always been first time, nearly always 44000 and never a random disconnect - its good!

I am connected to NTL however I use Tiscali to connect. I pay £9.99 for 100 hours unmetered a month and there is also an Unlimited unmetered tariff for £14.99. Why pay a connection charge everytime? There are no restrictions on time of day etc and I connect first time everytime. Tiscali

I've been with NTL for years, initially with dial-up, and now with Cable Modem. Never had any real problems, fairly reliable.

v1rotate, why pay £9.99p per month for 100 hours with Tiscali, when you can pay £9.98p per month for 24 hour access with 08002go?

They accept other than BT lines, so NTL is not a problem.

I joined quite recently, and other than a minor hickup a couple of weeks back, when they had a server problem, all has been well.

I normally connect first time at 45333bps. They cut you off after two hours, but you can re-connect immediately.

If anyone is interested;

I like NTL. Mostly reliable, the odd problem, but on the whole a very good service.

I get cut-offs on OE if I don't use it, just reading mails. On IE I don't get any at all - except after two hours.

I think some of you are not aware of the ntl deal - the connection charge we were on about is for telephone calls. The internet connection is always free 24/7.

The monthly minimum charge is £15 which includes phone calls, routed via ntl, up the value of £15. So, if you normally spend £15 or more a month on calls, you can do it through ntl and your internet access will be free.

Cool

It works for me. As Background says if your normal phone bill is over £15 a month then your internet calls are free. If for example your 'phone bill is only, say, £10.50, then you will be charged for your internet calls until you reach £15. It's probably the only ISP that actually is free. As for the 4 minute disconnection, my dialler warns me with 30 seconds to go, so I just hit the refresh button.
