You must leave "Systray" as well as "Explorer" running to keep Windows running properly.
Check the following document in Microsoft Knowledge Base: PSS ID Number: Q222469. (Just type Q222469 into the Google search box and the document comes up as first of four "finds").

I take it you are talking about defragmenting? If not, does the same apply?
I have no problem with Scandisc but Defragmenting sometimes takes MANY MANY hours, because it keeps saying "drives contents has changed".

When you boot up and just before you get the message "starting windows" hit F8.
This will enable you to start in "safe mode" (select it from the options).
Windows will only load essential drivers and de-fragging and scandisk will become a lot quicker.
This proceedure avoids trying to work out what you have running in the background.

Has a program called tweakui which will allow you to setup a defrag on boot before all drivers load which is the quickest and easiest solution. Oh and it does a lot more besides! Shareware I think.

Disabling the anti-virus usually speeds scandisk and defrag up considerably - especially if it is set to monitor in the background.
Depending on the flavour of AV u have, you need to right click on its icon in the systray (bottom right of desktop) or kill it via the task manager (ctrt+alt+del).
I read somewhere that tweakui was written by the Microsoft gurus who developed Windows - either as an after-thought, or because it contains facilities which weren't allowed to be in the official version of Windows - depends which story you believe.
