Scandisc
Could someone please tell me what needs to be shut down to run a thorough scandisc. When I try it, many hours later, my system gives up because it says it is being interupted. Thank you in advance.

Use Ctrl Alt Del and shut down everything except explorer, I do this and it does the scan in about 30 minutes,

Make sure your screen saver is set to "none".

You must leave "Systray" as well as "Explorer" running to keep Windows running properly.
Check the following document in Microsoft Knowledge Base: PSS ID Number: Q222469. (Just type Q222469 into the Google search box and the document comes up as first of four "finds"). |
I take it you are talking about defragmenting? If not, does the same apply?
I have no problem with Scandisc but Defragmenting sometimes takes MANY MANY hours, because it keeps saying "drives contents has changed". ------------------ "I USED to be a PPRuNaholic, but now I'm CURED" |
Yep, same with defrag - otherwise the defrag program restarts every time you get a change of data on the disk drive.
|
When you boot up and just before you get the message "starting windows" hit F8.
This will enable you to start in "safe mode" (select it from the options). Windows will only load essential drivers and de-fragging and scandisk will become a lot quicker. This proceedure avoids trying to work out what you have running in the background. |
Thank you very much, will try that next time, save me wanting to

Has a program called tweakui which will allow you to setup a defrag on boot before all drivers load which is the quickest and easiest solution. Oh and it does a lot more besides! Shareware I think. |
Disabling the anti-virus usually speeds scandisk and defrag up considerably - especially if it is set to monitor in the background.
Depending on the flavour of AV u have, you need to right click on its icon in the systray (bottom right of desktop) or kill it via the task manager (ctrt+alt+del). I read somewhere that tweakui was written by the Microsoft gurus who developed Windows - either as an after-thought, or because it contains facilities which weren't allowed to be in the official version of Windows - depends which story you believe. Cheers aisleman or is it ctrl+alt+shoot? |
Lame, I love the cartoon; chuckled for ages!!
