I've constructed my first ever Web 'home page' ready for publication to the Web [using Win98SE & Publisher97]. Ideally, I need to have a page counter on it [to test the sites potential viability] but I don't know how to do it - can anybody help?. .I have seen so called 'free' offers but they end up either wanting banners on my site or to charge. Surely such a little thing should be easy to install without all that?. .Any help greatly appreciated.. .Thanks CB

Ask your web host (checking its faq first). If all you want is a counter then your host probably supports a simple cgi query that might go something like this:. .. .You are cool blue's <img src = "h t t p ://www.cool_blue_host.uk/cgi-bin/counter.xbm?/rest_of_path_to_cool_blue_page.html">'th visitor.. .. .Spaces added so it won't look like a real URL - HTH.

Page counters are passe. <gag>. .. .Use your site statistics available from your host to look at total hits and page hits.. .. .If you must use one, then make the number gif's transparant, and look at the counter file that stores the current count instead. but much easier to just look at ones stats.

Proper logs and statistics are usually simply unavailable from most "free" hosting services. It's not usually a question of pay more for add-ons, it's usually a question of choosing the ISP or hosting service that offers the features you want in the first place.

Hey CB, . .. .Glad you didn't take offence at my comment.. .. .You would really have to call each provider and ask about the stats offered. . .. .At the company I work at when not heli flying, we offer basic stats thru the site's control panel, but most opt for either a stats program to read the server log files that we provide for $10 (Webtrnds) or they download the log files to use with a program capable of reading them of their choice.. .. .But as I had stated, if you can't find one that provides page hits like you are looking for, you can make your counter invisable. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />
