Question email and www access failure

I have a HP Omnibook XE2 laptop,128 meg ram, Plll-500 with Windows 2000, and run IE6. All was working well until I was perhaps a little too enthusiastic in deleting a few HP files which I thought were no longer used as they seemed to relate to Win 98. Now, although I see the two small computers at the bottom right of my screen and a connection at 64k. When I ask to download my email I'm presented with a series of the dreaded yellow triangles. Error messages for all my mail socket 12007 and 10050, and the expected 800CCOD showing unable to connect.. .I also have a Sony Vaio, from which I have copied settings, and from which I can download all my email and access www with no problems using the same outlet. I cannot see what the problem is !! Any good ideas chaps/esses ?

Reinstall win2000. Make sure you back up your important files and mail first. I believe this is the quickest way in the long run. Don't be too quick to prune your hd next time

Mr Blue Sky,. .I had something similar a few weeks ago. I was in the US and using Compuserve as my ISP. I could log on, get e-mail in OE5 but neither reply nor get on the net. . .I tried various things, even “borrowed” the hotels settings but no good.. .Equally funny, I could not check the e-mail on Compuserve!. .I had decided that I would NOT mess with Dell’s settings, but eventually decided to try to reinstall IE and OE. Eventually, I got an error message telling me that Dial Up Adapter was missing.. .I looked at Control Panel, Network, and Installed Components and there it wasn’t!!. .Eventually I got it back in by reinstalling Win ME as Im not suggested (though not in such a long winded manner!!). .So check if Dial Up Adapter is there.. .Good luck!

WideBodiedEng, just out of interest, could you not use the "Restore" feature with ME to take you back to a date when you knew it was ok rather than re-installing ?. . . . [ 14 March 2002, 10:16: Message edited by: henry crun ]

Still might be recoverable - not sure what files you deleted though, possibly network related.. .. .I take it that you've looked in the Recycle Bin and can't find them there so that they could be restored?. .. .You could try uninstalling your modem and also removing your network components. If you've got a combo network / modem card you should uninstall the whole card and reinstall it (you may have a CDROM that comes with it). When you reinstall the card / modem your network components will be reinitialised along with it.. .. .The above will hopefully repair any damage you've inflicted on your Windows network stack, although you may need to reinstall your ISP's dialup software.. .. .If it's anything else, looks like an evening of fun reinstalling W2K . .. .Cheers

Hi Henry,. .Good question! I DID look at restore but I don't know why I didn't use it! Panic, possibly!! Now you mention it I must put in a restore event.. .Thanks for the prompt.

many thanks for all the suggestions, still no www and email.. .I've removed/reinstalled all components, reinstalled W2K all to no avail. A friend suggested looking at the TCP/IP settings, so I should be able to really screw it up now, rendering the machine suitable only for use as a doorstop.. .Everytime something like this happens, I do tend to agree with my wife's pet computer statement 'you should have left it alone ! '

Ok, let's see those dreaded errors in their entirety please. We can then proceed from there.
