Back to cookies, and spammail ..

I used to get very little span at my hotmail address, now I get sh!tloads. On most of the spam mails, there is a link at the bottom, which you can allegedly use, to remove yourself from the mailing list. On one of the first 'erotic site' spam mails I recieved, I cliked on this link, and entered my hotmail address, to have myself removed from the mailing list.

I could be wrong, but I recon the unscrupulous people who send these spammails, deliberatly target the poeple who use this 'remove me' link, as they know that the email address is activly in use, and is being checked. I get the odd 'erotic site' email at my yahoo address (which I use as my main email), and block them individually. I daren't take the chance again, that the 'remove me' link is genuine again.

For those of you interested in a bit of "piece of mind" while online, go to www.softseek.com There you can find a shareware program by the name of "Burnt Cookies" (and others) which allows you to selectively keep or "burn" cookies that are placed on your HD. Also for those that are online quite a lot (or especially with a full time connection), Zone Labs provides an excellent fire wall called "Zone Alarm" which you can find there also. The access that this blocks is much more of a concern than any cookies that you may get. Also, somewhere in Symantec's website (the company that sells the Norton products) is a page that will test your browser for privacy and show you where the "holes" are( http://security1.norton.com/us/intro...=sym&langid=us ). Suprisingly (or not) most windows OSs come pre-set up for file sharing and this website will also lead you through a "re-wire" for a more secure system while online.

Not a big deal if you are not online for long periods of time and/or don't have any State secrets on your PC. Cookies are the least of our worries though.

As was just mentioned, never reply to a "remove" request as these spammers are running programs that run through names and/or words and put them in front of a server name (eg @server.name) to get your email should you reply.

Bom Voyage!
Jerk

Edited for the links

You probably know this already, but just in case...if you are receiving spam in your Outlook Express inbox just highlight the offending item in the usual way (click once on it only!) then go to the list of options at top of the screen and click on the word 'Messages'. A menu drops down. Click on the option 'Block Sender'.
This will then delete the offending message, and any others from the same sender already on your computer. It will also automatically delete any future spam from the same sender.
You will have to do this every time you receive spam from different senders.

This is not a complete cure because these spammers often change their 'Sender Name' with each email they send you. However it might help to remove repeat offenders.

It's also not a complete cure because you still end up wasting time downloading their crap even though it's immediately deleted on completion...but it might make you feel better!

dallas dude said it but it needs to be repeated over and over.
Danny, we are in awe of you. This is a remarkable website.
I am based not a million miles from you so I know what it costs you in time and energy to do this.
There will always be plonkers but be assured you are truly appreciated by anyone who values the incredible world-wide exchange of information that is available for the first time in my long career.
Thanks a million Danny.

Just a sugestion;

I use Norton Internet Security. I bought it with the intention to use mostly the Anti-Virus, but as I used the Firewall I was pleased to see all that unwanted cookies and info being blocked. It can't prevent the cookie from...let's say doubleclick.com being created , but he can block the cookie on it's way out. So even if after the internet session you get to the cookies directory and you find the "beast" there it wont be able to do much. Works fine for me. As someone sugested , a FREE alternative and very good is the "IDECIDE PRIVACY COMPANION" that you can download from Tucows.
What my Norton also do , is to block the browser reference - but then you get problems with websites that you have not allowed to recieve this info as you can get a "messy" presentation or have no view at all. Also the function that tells from which site you came from can be blocked (so the stats companys can't make a profile on you if you're worried with that). You can also have some informations blocked on your computer , like e-mail. If you put there that your e-mail isn't to go anywhere outside your computer , it stays there. There are a lot of more functions in that soft but would take a lot space to describe.

In resume, if you want (some) privacy on the net (at a home-user level) you have a choice of free programs to download or you have to put your hand in the wallet and pay for it (buy a software).

I cited Norton because I have it. In no way I have anything to do with symantec or I am gaining anything with this.

Regards
AB

When connected to pprune my firewall audit log reports over 100 events per hour, even if I am not clicking anything.

This "hidden" background activity annoys me because everytime an event occurs IE5.5 sounds a "click" noise, very annoying.

BTW Cookies are harmless by design ,but as some one once said..
"In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, in practice, there is"

No DIY shop will sell you a lock and say it will prevent burgularies. Same with firewalls.
