Question regarding upgrade
Hope someone can advise on an upgrade I would like to attempt 
I have a sony vaio rx406 desktop 2.4; which I would like to increase the memory from 256 to 512, and also the graphics card from 64 to 128.
The present memory is something called DDR SDRAM and the graphics card a GFORCE mmx.
I live in Spain so was planning for my next visitor to bring the bits out with them.
But, looking on PCWorlds site for example there are maybe 20 differant memories all with differant specs. and the same for the graphics card
So the question is does it matter or can I just ask someone to go into the shop and ask for ' 256 ddr sdram and a 128 geforce graphics card please'?

Pages 75 & 76 of the Sony Vaio PCV RX406 User Guide ( as per Sony Web Site and available here ) states :
Use only PC2100 DDR SDRAM modules ( 266 Mhz ).
Your PC supports a maximum of 1.5Gb memory and has 3 x 184 pin slots to accept the memory modules.
A single Kingston 512Mb module will cost around £32.00 with UK delivery - e.g. from here but shop around as prices vary considerably.
Graphics :
According to the specifications for your PC on the Sony Web Site here you have an nVidia GeForce4 MX 460 with 64 Mb DDR memory.
Can anyone advise on a suitable upgrade ?

Silly question maybe, but should I get a single 512 and sit it along side the 256 or just replace it? Or even just get another 256 and have the 2 sitting together??

Either really - I would buy a new 512Mb module and run that on its own.
You can leave your current 256 Mb module in place - it WILL make a difference but you probably won't notice much difference over and above the new 512Mb !
It may depend on whether your new module is the same make as the existing one, as occasionally problems can occur with memory of different makes that are "unmatched", causing crashes and other "glitches" so I'd try it - see how it goes - if it all runs fine with both modules then great, otherwise you could always sell the old one on E-Bay for a few quid to offset some of the cost of the new one
