Sony Ericsson k700i

PPruners

Just thought I would post this in case anybody else had the same phone and the same problems.....

Recently upgraded to a Sony Ericsson k700i on Orange and experienced lots of problems with it -
1) 3 second delay in calls connecting
2) Phone freezing 2-3 times a day
3) really annoying Orange branded software which removed SE menus and replaced them with Orange world/camera options

Called Orange and they tested the phone remotely and said there was no problem and they could do nothing. Went to on the internet to find that lots of other unhappy people having the same problem which is caused by old/faulty firmware - and guess what - Orange have programmed the phone so that you can fix this with an SE upgrade from their website.

Found Orange extremely unhelpful but after a lot of searching found some software that removes Orange/Vodaphone/O2 etc branding and replaces it with up to date SE unbranded firmware.

Still in dispute with Orange over my right to reject the phone, but if anybody is having a similar problem get in touch and I will give you details of the site.

Yep, I agree - a rubbish phone.

When you say 3 second delay, do you mean that when you answer the phone and speak the other person can't hear you for the first couple of seconds? That's what I get anyway.

I could also add to the list of problems: the strip of rubber at the bottom is very irritating to keep opening and closing, and the charger when plugged in keeps cutting on and off due to a dodgy socket.

Cool

I would say that the fact that the phone keeps freezing would be grounds that it is faulty/not fit for purpose and would be exchanged under warranty.

If you do change the software then you would invalidate the warranty so be carefull.

spannersatcx is right - you need to be careful before changing the firmware as it will invalidate your warranty

I have a law degree and have ended up taking Orange to the Small Claims Court because they do not seem to realise that their policy of not being able to return an upgrade is worthless if the phone does not meet the standards set out in various consumer protection legislation.....anyway......

I have got another k700i which I upgraded using www.totalserver.net after buying a credit from www.faceoffmobiles.co.uk - you will need a T28 cable and a serial port to plug it into. If you follow the instructions carefully it works really well and resolves all the issues including the 3s delay which is seriously annoying.

You could try something else first - the SE site can upgrade your firmware if you have a dss-20/dss-25 docking station (you can get them cheaply from ebay) and have a go at upgrading though their update site, although as I said earlier some operators have barred this but it may be lifted soon. I dont think this would harm your warranty

my email is [email protected] if anybody goes ahead with it and wants some help.

Thanks for the heads-up about this phone.

I was very keen on upgrading (had my current T610 for about 15 months) but the fact that Orange wanted £49.99 from me for the privelige put that on the back burner.

(This is despite the fact that I always spend over £80/month and my last bill....the consequence of some heavy roaming...was £162!)

I asked why this phone is free for new subscribers....but they didn't buy the "so you treat new customers better than your existing ones?" argument.

Never mind.....guess I'll just have to wait for this...

Hmm, I was considering a K700, does anyone have experience of my other choices the Samsung E800 or Siemens SL65?

I currently have the Nokia 8310 which is a nice phone and have been half thinking about replacing it. I was keen on the idea of the Motorola V3 until I saw it in the flesh. Ugh! Positive proof that you should never buy off the web without seeing the real article first.

I had a T610 for 18 months and just upgraded to a K700 on O2 online contract.

No problems with phone calls, or branded menus etc, everything in fine working order. Voda did stick their logo all over my T610 which I could never get rid of, maybe depends on the provider?

As for the E800, I believe the E810 is coming out and is alot better than the 800, perhaps waiting a few weeks for? Never rated Siemens i'm afraid.
