Porn is NOT a victimless crime

ok, but it was just a respite from studying and I was at the computer anyway.

Every now and again a browser launches and tries to get to a site it can't find. Any idea how to stop this

I looked at the START menu and scheduled tasks, but can't find anything.

Hi Onan,

Could you let me know what the site address is that it tries to find.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

I spend all my free time on various Security forums getting rid of the that these sites install. I really don't want any on mine.. mind you if the site passes muster.

No, I have a feeling that it may be CWS. The latest batch though, can be extremely difficult to clean up. The easy one just dumps a super-hidden file in the sys folder. Then when you can identify it, it won't let you delete it without mucking about with permissions etc.

The latest hides the complete Windows key, so that you have to import a new one over the top. All good fun. It usually shows up as an about:blank page hijack first.. hence wanting to know what the page was.

If they're running W9x or ME, we've got a relatively straight forward fix sorted out (for the moment), but if you see anyone here with this on 2K or XP, then it's not worth even attempting a fix here. Send them to Techguy, ComputerCops or TechSupportForum and we'll see what we can do. Still not many guarantees though.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

Yes, HJT should (although sometimes not straight away) show up something to point us in the right direction, but a few of the latest ones don't always.. it's a real pig basically..

Even when HJT has a big flag waving at us, going "I'm here, fix me if you can" it can prove extremely difficult to fix in some cases, but then that's half the fun, I sometimes forget what the other half of the fun is though..

Cheers

e-liam & richard

I forget the name of the site that kept appearing, but I think it was an "about:". It's not happening so much any more, but instead, I'm getting a windows installer window appearing that then tries to install XP small Business.

Over and over again.

I'm updating all the XP fixes I downloaded and it's installing them as I type. It's been doing this for over an hour now.

I hate computers.

Hi Onan,

This will find the superhidden file.. hopefully. :)

Copy the contents of the bold text to Notepad.
Name the file Appinit.bat
Save as type All Files
Save on the Desktop.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Please copy and paste the contents of the Windows.txt file into your next reply. It will look strange but please paste it anyway.

Also, could you tell me if you are using NTFS or FAT32. (MyComputer | (Right click)C:\ | Properties and it tells you.)

Cheers

Liam
