Hurricane season in Antigua

Does it get effected from 20 Oct to 6th Nov? Looking at going on holiday then. General weather at that time of year?

I'm no expert but believe you should be Ok as the dates are at the back end of the "season". For the horse's mouth try the NHC

Have a good one anyway!

Hurricane season lasts from June 1st to Dec 31st. Antigua hasn't been hit by one in quite a few years, and the reports from the NHC state that the problem areas this year seem to be the Western Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Having said all that, it's still just a matter of luck, and if you do get caught in one, look for a good hurricane party to ease the stress.

P.S. No back end to the season. Got caught in one (not in Antigua) on Dec14th.

Forgot to answer the question re. weather. By the end of October, it's started to cool down a bit. Any rain would be associated with tropical waves. Sea conditions would be good for all activities. And as the tourist season hasn't really started as yet, all prices (hotel, meals etc.) would be non-tourist, i.e considerably cheaper.

Yep, that TAF was compliments of Hurricane Dean that passed between St.Lucia and Martinique this morning as a weak Cat 2 Hurricane. All we got in ANU was a bit of wind and some rain - we were lucky.
In fact, all the Lesser Antilles were lucky as Dean is now a Cat 4 hurricane in the Caribbean Sea with winds of 135G155 - and it's heading for the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

Yep, was off on thursday, operated yesterday. Opinion on the wind was based on relaxing at home looking at the clouds speeding by. Yesterday SXM was out for most of the day with gusts to 50. Last night 2 Air Caraibes A-330s diverted to ANU. Heard that one was going to FDF the other to SXM.

Yep ramp was crazy with those 330s and all the other long haul airliners.Wind was 090/33 plus and minus 15 knots on short final with the shear.I understand AA went around in SXM then called it a day, back to SJU.

Well..... (As I often start my posts)

I Just finished the second long stint on Duty compliments of "Dean" (must be a brother to "Ivan") T'was a sight to behold, thousands of visitors and residents congregating at the airport to get the hell off of this rock. Delays mounted as APIS information had to be checked and many a data had errors.

As Dean reached "cat 4" the good people started to get frantic, the ground staff became simply overwhelmed with demands and turned into walking zombies. We finally got the flights out and as I returned from my last run to Florida this afternoon, the airport was eerily quiet, a few Phillipinos were cleaning and a few stragglers were loitering around with their roll-aways behind them, but the pre-event exodus was over.

As I came home changed my clothes and poured a stiff drink, my rough luck continued, first the cork broke off and then there was only a dribble left in the bottle of 12yr Dewar's and I didn't have anymore! luckily I found a bottle of Johnny Walker green (it was a present some time ago, probably had it 2 yrs) so I opened that and poured a little more. Now that I have consumed that I'm getting hungry, my wife left a piece of fish, as I am typing, I'm frying that and wonder what I am going to eat along with it, probably another Scotch!

Perhaps after a few of those I'll sleep right through Dean who is forecast to visit us tomorrow morning.

I'm going to watch some TV first (because that'll go first), then come back to the internet and finally get down to read a book.

On Tuesday we'll either start bringing everyone back or start the post event evacuation, in either case, nothing I can do about it!

Bloody Hurricane's! I wonder how much my real-estate investments have suffered because of it!

Cheers!

Good luck Fluf. Don't forget to wrap the bottle of JW in a thick towel to protect it in case of accidents.

How did it go Fluf. Hope all is well with you and yours. Seems like you folks got lucky with Dean taking a turn just before it reached Jamaica.

Boy, were we lucky!

"Dean" chose to stay on a westerly track and passed to the south of Cayman. A huge relief for everyone.

I am glad I had a Scotch the other day when i finally got home after a couple of humdinger days, because I haven't had a chance to have one since then.

Anyway, back to the saltmines!

Well Fluf what was the "on the floor" panic factor from the public? It must be fascinating study into people to see how they react when trying to leave - were they mostly calm, mostly not calm, or just bloody akward?

Well;

for anyone interested in studying the human animal, it was quite interesting; first you have the beligerency of the person accustomed to being granted a lot of priviledge in a western type society, and the relatively submissive attitude of those that are used to having to relinquish control over their destiny to others.
After about 5 hours of standing in line and waiting, even the most assertive realized that no amount of agitation would create any kind of favourable treatment for them and in the majority of cases, people just simply awaited their turn at getting checked in and boarded.

From the perspective of the person trying to provide customer service, it was pure agony!
