Question Intsructor Time

I have heard that a lot of companies are hesitant to hire pilots with a lot of instructor time. I am limited to instructing for at least the next two/three years, but how many hours does it take before you are labled a "Career Instructor", therefore discouraging companies fronm wanting to hire you?

Talking

Disregard the 'instructor'stigma,it hasn't seemed to be bane to getting a job so far!Why are the 'schools' complaining about no Instrutors available???It's an excellent way to accrue 'PIC' time, which an awful lot of F/O's lack for the ATR,and promotion

Unhappy

It's true m&v and I would add that no matter what experience you have, there will always be some one out there that has a little more than wath you have. I was lucky enough to get some turboprop time at a very early stage in my carreer and just when I was ready to jump on a jet I was beginig to think that I was labbled as a "turboprop pilot" for ever. But eventualy I moved on to jets. Some of my freinds were in a similar situation on pistons aircraft, and eventualy they moved on to where they wanted to go. I gess what I'm saying is there are no job that will come to you free. You have to go out ther and sell your stuff to the companies. Make your own luck and meet as many people as possible. In this industry it's all about who you know.

Be the master of your desteny....

Wink

I was talking to a fellow at a Transport Canada PDM lecture this weekend that said Bearskin told him that he had too much instructor time and that instructors don't make good "bush" pilots. I have also heard from other sources that instructors make good airline FO's because they have to exercise CRM almost every day. Evidently you might have to spell CRM for the "bush" pilots at Bearskin.

Cool

When I first started flying, I found one thing was a constant. The Instructors were barely ahead of me, let alone the aircraft.

When I started flying Jets, CT 114, my first instructor had maybe, 400 hrs. I thought he was truly experienced at the time.

When I finished the CT 114 course, 150 hrs later and went to Portage La Prairie to really learn how to fly. I was shocked by the fact that there were no young instructors. In fact there was not one instructer with less than 4000 hrs and many operational tours!

I thought to myself, I have truly entered the hallowed halls of true aviation as they obviously require much more expertise and knowledge to control these wonderful machines, to truly fly as God intended man to fly.

Through the years I have often questioned the wisdom of the "Pipeline Instructor" mentality. I can see that it is a way of building time for young plank drivers, but this is not condusive to passing on knowledge.

Now I know I'll probably get some sheyite (you can't say **** here) and abuse from the younger and inexperienced crowd out there, but before you throw the first stone, reflect on your own "student" time and how you think you may have benefited from a more experienced instructor as we do in the Rotary Wing world.

Cheers, OffshoreIgor
