RH,
There seems to be alot of assumptions made here.....just to set the record straight, I did work several years for a "flagcarrier" and then moved on to a major charter.....to soon find out that nothing is for sure in the airline industry (shortly after 9/11). THE "Flag carrier" tends to take precedance over just about anything else in aviation ( at least in Canada). So a profitable, efficient, independant charter is dropped like a hot Rolex in Times Square so as to let the struggling flag carrier drift in and out of banckruptcy as you mentioned ( and pay bag tossers 75K)....
On the other point(s) that you mentioned, quote:"What do you suggest to those pilots who have not gotten on with a "flag carrier" slit their wrists and call it a day. Change careers. You do realize that people have bills to pay. That's not to say we should work for free or get pissed on, and certainly I know you don't believe that the major airlines only hire the best. So in the end I know what I will do. I will continue to fly. I will continue to enjoy it and I will continue to feed my kids and give them the best I can. And I will also strive to make my profession a better one instead of whining about how the discount carriers have screwed the industry over."
I did not do any of the above (call it a day, slit my wrists,or whine) but took advantage of the global market as you mentioned and do contract work worldwide to pay bills, provide for my kids and still enjoy flying as much as I possibly can.....and for as long as I possibly can.
To boil it down, if pilots in general were not so naive and get to see through managements style of divide and rule, then this flying business would not be in the state that it is today....where you can get a pilot to fly a 100 million dollar aircraft with all the associated responsibilities but only willing to pay him peanuts.
Like Brucelee mentioned in his post, pilots are their own worst enemies and management was and is able to see through that and make it work in their favour !!!
In the end, wether it's flying for a flag carrier, or a LCC,or global contract flying, pilots should try to raise the bar and not give in to the lowest manipulative bidder in order to restore some pride and dignity to this profession and hopefully the little guy trying to make ends meet doing what he loves will be able to benefit from this great profession .
At least, that's my two cents worth....
Cheers,
RWTY

Sure would be nice to see a national standard in equipment pay. That is to say that no matter who you work for, your pay would be a fixed standard for that equipment, based on weigth, number of pax etc. This of course would be decided by a national association of pilots-good luck. I think it would be great to see managers make less money and pilots getting remunerated for their level of responsibility. Nothing wrong with putting food on the table. Equally nothing wrong with fair pay to buy that food. Just because you work for an LCC or Charter or whatever doesn't mean you compromise what you're worth.

I will agree with you there. Pilot's are pilot's worst enemies. For every one pilot who say's hell no, I will not work for free there are 10 who will. If only ( and I know I'm dreaming) pilots could actually come together and take it straight to the governments. But for that you would need total unification and as we all know the lobby groups bought by the owners would be quiet an adversary.

P.S. Your right C3 was a good airline.

Been out of the Canadian loop for a while... so what actually did happen with airplanes this summer?

Last time I chatted with anyone from Zoom it was at 10W talking to Don P. By the way Don I found the photos I took, not great ones but will e-mail them to you...sorry for the delay and hope things are going well
