So what do the Canadian crew think about this?

le soixante neuf 23rd Nov 2006 22:36

Hilar...

I think it's hilarious, first of all, I wouldn't let junior with 4000 hours land on a windy day, let alone command a widebody over the high seas.
Second, if I had a nickel for every two bit operator who envisioned this that or the other airplane, i wouldn't have to fly at all.
Godspeed.

doo 27th Nov 2006 20:54

ahh Dear Sir but it's a different world over here in the old countries,
I came with 1300 odd hrs mostly single straight onto a med t prop, then with 1900 odd rhs 737 then with just over 5000 lhs 737 it's been good fun landing at LHR during some windy days. Fly the bus now and that's even more fun(sic);)

yyzdub 13th Dec 2006 11:25

What about the 21 year old FR Captain???

about the number of hours I had when BOAC let me command a bootiful 707 on its worldwide routes - don't think I'd have called BOAC a two bit operator!

:= := a bit of arrogance perchance mon brave!!!

Please remember that here in Canada the experience levels are quite a bit higher. There are a ton of pilots for airlines to pick from and therefore don't need to hire low time guys. Air Canada, Jazz, and Westjet are all hiring at this time and the majority of the guys getting on have at least 4000-5000hrs. Thats for an entry level airline job (rhs Dash-8, CRJ, EB190 or B737) I personally know of guys that have almost 9000 hrs and are still in the RHS of a CRJ!! A big difference from the rest of the world.

vodkaholic 21st Dec 2006 20:04

are there any canadian cabin crew that come on here who work for Zoom?

i've just applied for the Uk london gatwick base and would like to know roughly how much you earn as main cabin crew? do you get quite a lot of commission, or is all commission just based on duty free products?

any info would be greatly appreciated! or PM me if you prefer!
Thanks

BCF: you are correct, it takes a lot of hours in Canada but may I had that the numbers does not tell the full story...How many times did those individuals come up with Towing banner time, instructing in a 150 !!!! For a few years I flew with a lot of these folks and while some were good pilot with excellent attitude, I found many that were not equip with the minimum common sense to ride a bicycle...But they had 3000 hrs and more .Bottom line is that in Canada ( and USA) the idea of a good experience pilot comes with a big number attached to it....Unfortunately they should also pay attention to what king of flying it is and in what conditions.....With all this new technology around, 2000 hrs of flying a Beaver or towing banner does nothing to equip an individual to fly an Airline job...Nothing wrong with all different type of experience but each have a specific objective and they don't automatically add up for total experience in a EFIS Jet.

Zoom has plans to add 757's...

allwayscold 14th Jan 2007 23:36

There are no plans for any Zoom Canada's airplanes to go to the UK. In fact its offical 1 757 for April 1st bringing the fleet to 5. Stop the foolish rumours.

Just curious. Is there any other industry other than aviation in which people get really giddy when they think that someone else will be taking a pay cut or perhaps will be losing thier job. What the F(&(

G-OPCON 27th Jan 2007 03:34

Well looking who is now at the healm of the Zoom UK, I would say they have an exciting and interesting time ahead.:ok:

Well Hello there Richardhead......there must be some kind of reasoning behind your comments......either you are relatively new to aviation and/or you are one of the people who will "Fly for food"!?!?
If "pilots" stood together and avoided working for deadbeat airlines ( not specifying any particular airline) and tried to maintain some kind of basic starting salary commensurate with experience (like most still self respecting professions), then we would not be having this conversation...would we!?:ugh:
People would not get "giddy" at the prospect of others taking paycuts or job losses if they didn't give the opportunity to deadbeat airlines (worldwide) management to take advantage (more like preying) on "naive" newbie/optionless pilots. :suspect: .
And sad to say but the truth of the matter is that the guys who take the paycuts and job cuts bring it onto themselves in the first place:ouch: !!
So it's not a question of WTF but rather who gives a f*%# and if more pilots worldwide would give a f*%# then we would not be having this conversation!
RWTY :}

richardhead 3rd Feb 2007 09:49

rwethereyet, what is a deadbeat airline? I am guessing your definition of one is simply any airline that is not a so called flag carrier or one that does not pay half a mill the first year and give you 364 sick days the make you work more than 3 hours on the 365th. I am not naive to the state of our profession it is certainly not what alot of us had hoped for. That being said I do think it is naive to solely blame the airlines for all of our problems. I don't have to tell you or anyone for that matter that the world has changed in recent years. The market is now a global one. And of course with that comes great competition. I agree that some airlines leave much to be desired but, when a "flag carrier" is paying bag tossers 75k a year or has an enormous amount of it's emloyee's sitting around collecting paychecks doing nothing, then poping in and out of bankruptcy protection when ever it suits them. I would not be so quick to blame those who have maybe found a more efficient way of doing things. Ask someone in the auto sector. American auto makers have slashed thousands of jobs in recent years and there will be more to come. Would you call Nissan or Toyota or Kia deadbeat automakers. Probably not, I'm guessing an American autoworker would.

To your other point on will I or will I not fly for food. What do you suggest to those pilots who have not gotten on with a "flag carrier" slit their wrists and call it a day. Change careers. You do realize that people have bills to pay. That's not to say we should work for free or get pissed on, and certainly I know you don't believe that the major airlines only hire the best. So in the end I know what I will do. I will continue to fly. I will continue to enjoy it and I will continue to feed my kids and give them the best I can. And I will also strive to make my profession a better one instead of whining about how the discount carriers have screwed the industry over.

brucelee 4th Feb 2007 00:20

Discount carriers are a result a of customer demand and the owners of these carriers supplying that demand with hopes to make money. Nothing wrong with that except our profession as it use to be will never again be the the same. It seems if you work for Walmart you accept it and defend your actions while the rest of us dream of better days. We are our own worst enemies. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work(?)....
