Emirates Brisbane/Perth Open Day

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to hear back from those in Brisbane and Perth about the Open Days that Emirates held on the 05th and 10th of November. I'm sure someone from this forum attended.

Was it worth going or simply a Open Day where they accepted peoples resumes??

Look forward to hearing about your experiences

Cheers

Emirates Application/Admin Process???

Hi guys,

New to the board and just wanting to know something about the Emirates selection process?

OK I recieved an email from them approx. a week ago stating "you have not been shortlisted please apply again in 6 months" this was 2 days prior to the LHR Open Days advertised online and oon various www job boards. On the morning of the LHR Open Day, circumstances made it impossible for me to attend this Open Day so I missed this opportunity.

However, there are other open days in Manchester later this month on different dates. I am wondering...... If I attended either of these open days will they have a record of my application and "thanks but no thanks letter/reference"?? That was my first attempt at applying for Emirates online and I wished I had professional photos loaded. So I think that counted agaisnt me.

So does anyone know if I would be able to slip through this and show the recruitment officers exactly what I have on offer and sell myself within the interview?? This is really all I want to do and if I try and attend these interview it can be fairly ££££ for accommodation, car hire etc.... I would really like to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation or can tell me that you definatly dont need an "invitation" to attend an Open day - as I have read elsewhere?

Thanks for reading this - if you have gotten this far I really appreciate it :)

chicfly1 5th Nov 2003 22:06

I would go along if I was you, I attended an open day a few weeks back and have had a call asking me to come back for an interview in 2 weeks. I too applied online months ago and have heard absolutely nothing. Like you said before I thought it was worth going along so that they could see what I had to offer, online applications don't always give them a true picture!

Another piece of advice, I arrived at 0730 for a 0900 start and was prob about no.200 in the queue! By 0830 there were so many people I think they may have turned some away. Make sure your CV is professional and put your d.o.b on it, I didn't and they had to write it on! Also take a head shot and full length pic, although it states on the website they just want a passport pic, I have noticed in magazine adverts that they ask for both.

Anyway good luck I've got my fingers crossed x

gege 6th Nov 2003 08:37

Honestly I don't really think that the photo matters a lot, despite what is mentioned on this forum.

When I applied I sent them a really crappy picture (at that time I hadn't read these forums yet), it was just a holidaypic, my hair loose, wairing jeans, hands in my pocket,... but they invited me to an interview months later (unfortunatly I was not selected).

Hope this helps a bit...

Breaking a contract with Emirates

I was just wondering if anybody could tell me what happens if you break the 3 year contract with Emirates Airlines? Is there a fee you have to pay or anything like that??

Thanks in advance! :)

chicfly1 6th Nov 2003 20:01

A friend of mine did her six months then left and I don't think she had to pay anything. Have you got a job with them? I have my interview coming up!

JB777 6th Nov 2003 20:16

Hi sarah,

friends of mine have left after only afew months employment, and have'nt paid any Bond, but they told 'E' that they weren't happy, and that staying would make them even more unhappy - which would effect their customer service and performance!

If it's not for you or are unhappy, tell them!

They know working out there is'nt for everyone!

How long have you worked for them - when do you start with BA?

JB737:)

flyblue 6th Nov 2003 20:30

This information should be written on your contract.

Flying_Sarah747 6th Nov 2003 21:04

Thanks for the info everyone! :) I don't actually work for EK, but I've got an interview with them on Monday, and I figure that the contract questions isn't appropriate for the interview...lol :)

Emirates Lhr

Hi to all Ppruners!

Well I have some great news. I was invited to an interview at LHR on tuesday, and was successful in getting through the whole day. I had a final interview on Wed and now have to wait four to five weeks to find out if I have the job! I can't believe it. There were around 65 invited and only 8 of us lucky ones got through.

So I thought I would write a bit about the day and some neccessary advice for all you going to the EK open days and/or invited interviews.

Firstly, this was my third attempt. I have been to two other open days. Believe it or not I had the same recruitment lady for the third time - Danielle from Dubai. She is a fantastic lady but scared the hell out of me on Tuesday. I thought because she recognised me I was a gonner!

Anyhow when I got to my final interview she informed me that the only reason I didn't get through before - is because I was not 21!! So there you have it - you DO need to be 21 to be selected.

The day pretty much went as so:
1. filled in survey sheet with a question on it about customer service
2. watched EK video and asked questions
3. did group sessions
4. eliminations
5. did 2 more group sessions
6. eliminations and hand out final interviews
7. fill in pyschological questionere

next day: final interviews

the day was wonderful, very informative - but at the same time - very stressful. You must come prepared.

You must come dressed in a highly presentable manner - ladies knee length skirt - hair tied back, minimum jewellery. You must have 2 professional photos. these are needed at final interview. one head and shoulder - long hair back for ladies with big smile, and full length shot - normal size photo. These MUST be properly done and must be taken at the same time. head and shoulders must be taken straight on, full length - they must be able to see hands and legs for females. these photos are send to dubai and seen by the "senior" management of emirates. you can be turned down if you dont take the time to get them done properly.

Also come prepared with your passport. they will need a photocopy if you are successful in getting a final interview.

The key is - not to be seen to be stressed! You must relax, be yourself and smile. Don't be too quiet - don't be too loud. get involved in conversation.

Ok well if there is anything anyone would like to know - please ask. It is easier to get through the day knowing how to prepare. Lets just hope I am successful after this!! :)

Bye

Emirates

Very impressed with everyone's efforts. I too put my heart and soul into getting the job I now have or well am starting.

I tried for Emirates in March and didn't get past the second stage and now after going for my interview 3 weeks ago am sitting in a cafe in Dubai.

Keep at it.;)

Flying_Sarah747 7th Nov 2003 20:25

Hmm, well I'm only 20, do you think there's no chance of them hiring me??? I hope not. :(

AI1 8th Nov 2003 14:13

congrats craic1510,
i have gone through the previous discussions regarding emirates interviews in this forum. specifically,
1) i would like to know what were the topics for discussion and whether there was any other group exercise other than the discussion. (like u r given a couple of objects and asked to build something useful and stuff like that).
2) the general atmosphere of your discussion. heated debate, the boss attitude etc....
3) the interview- are they based on the test results along with other questions or formal interview?

i attended their open day held in dubai and did the english test. was asked to wait as they had a large number of candidates. was told to expect a call within 10 days, if i am successful:uhoh: , for further tests. the test was ok so am expecting a call. hope it comes pretty soon. ie the reason why i would like to know more about the next round, as i have been told to come well prepared.

thanks in advance

AI1 :ok:

craic1510 8th Nov 2003 23:26

Hi! Ok lets see what I can do...

The group exercises we did consisted of these questions (but they do change!):
1. you are creating a new civilisation either on earth or another planet of your choice. Pick 10 professionals to start the civilisation with
2. you have so many guys and girls from different nationalities and of different ages - match them up in pairs to share apartments with in dubai. discuss why.
3. there is a customer complaint about service recieved from a passenger. discuss the complaint and how you would respond to it.

The general atmosphere of the discussion is relaxed. The idea is that everyone gets to say something. no-one is wrong. you need to praise people for what they say and you must be "seen" to be listening. no interupting. sit up staright, and smile.

The final interview is based party on your answers in the pychological test as well as other scenario questions e.g. a time when you gave great customer service, a time when you had to say no to someone etc.

It is formal, but relax and pause between the question and giving an answer. show you are thinking about your answer.

To everyone that gets to the interview stage - just relax. If you are seen to be stressed and nervous - it won't help. Talk to others, make some friends. That way the day is fun and you can talk through the day with others.

About being 20 - I wouldn't say not go. Give it a shot. They do take people on after 21. That is the minimum age - but just going anyway and giving it a shot shows determination and you learn an awful lot about the company on the day. it is worthwhile just attending. Plus if after you tunr 21, you have the same interviewer, they will praise you for your determination anhd persistance.

Good luck to all. Keep trhowing the questions at me. I want to be of help to as many people as possible. We all should help eachother right?

craic1510 :ok:

AI1 9th Nov 2003 17:26

hi,
thanx for the info. but would like to make a point that emirates have a couple of standard questions which they review from time to time. refering to an earlier post by meisu from thailand( not sure abt country) i found that the question paper we both got were the same. this prompted me to ask for what were the other questions.do not know how accurate the judgement is but i think unless they see this post i might be getting something similar. ultimately what matters is how well u perform on the "day".

'we should all help each other'- something which seems to be disappearing real fast in today's world. sorry but it is a fact.

lets try and change this.

any other info would be of great help. anything which may seem ordinary but which will have an influence on the final result.

carrioke 9th Nov 2003 22:49

Hi there, basically for the first 6 months you are under probation and if you wish to leave you just need to give a weeks notice as do EK if they wish to terminate your contract. Normally after this you are given a 3year contract which you or Emirates can break with a months notice unless there is some reason i.e you are HIV, pregnant etc in which case you leave pretty much as soon as. Otherwise they are very good and flexible to your needs. There is no bond or penalty for leaving at all and they are a great airline to work for. Good luck and happy flying

PaulE 10th Nov 2003 02:32

Dear Gege,

Thank you for the info!

I really dont want to take the chance with candid pictures, so I will be applying with professional pics - then again in the same breath, I think candid pics are a little more personal - but thats only my opinion.

Guys, does anyone know if YOU MUST have an invite to the Emirates open days eg - Birmingham on the 15th? Did anyone attend ANY Emirates Opendays without one?? Is this really valid as they are able to scrap you mid stream regardless.... any info people would be great!!!!

BTW - If anyone is attending the Birmingham Open day - drop me an email or pvt msg.

Take care all

AI1 10th Nov 2003 12:07

Open Days

as far as i know u dont need an invitation for attending the open days. that is what is seen here in dubai when they hold open days.
hoe that helps.

take care and all the best for ur open day:ok:

final interview for emirates

Hey Everyone,

I made it through to the final interview for emirates, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect in regards to questions and answers during the interview please???

Any feedback would be much appreciated...
P.S. Hi Greg.

Nicole 10th Nov 2003 18:32

Well done!! I have been with emirates for 3 years, it a tough interview. When i had mine in 2000 we have 3 group games, some quite difficult, basically tips i can give you are: try not to be the group leader, dont over participate, be a good listener, ackowledge what people say, good eye contact, sit straight, dont cross legs, they will be watching you as soon as you walk in, be friendly so everyone, say hi, blah blah, be early and look very smart.
They are looking for a follower, good team player, friendly, interactive!! Good luck, if you havent heard in a month it means you more or less have it, those who hear straight away dont!! Dubai have to approve you, it took them 6 months for me!! Then others have been luckier, call after a couple of weeks to see how your interview went, shows your keen!!

GOOD LUCK!!:O

Nicole 10th Nov 2003 18:37

Hello

I have been with EK for just over 3 years now, DIFFINATLY have proffesional photos done, it shows your keen, willing to spend a bit of money for the right image, be smart, suit, conservative, remember it is a muslim airline, look like you would in the uniform. Good luckx

AI1 10th Nov 2003 18:40

hi,
any idea how many they will recruit from the 3 open days held during Oct. and Nov. in dubai?? probable start dates.

titmitch 10th Nov 2003 23:50

I went to the open day at man yesterday and 120 people turned up. We handed in our c.v. 's and photos, watched a video about Emirates and then asked questions. No interviews happened because so many people turned up. It did sound exciting and i'm just waiting to hear if i get an interview:\

Hermie 11th Nov 2003 11:08

Hi,

If its an open day interview, what is the recommended dress code for males and females out there who wants to know.

Should we carry bags, etc ? I reckon there'll be alot of people going down therefore there would be no personal interview session.

SocialFlyer 11th Nov 2003 15:49

Guys and Gals

Any updates on the Perth and Brisbane interviews????

I'd really like to hear about your experiences.

Cheers

SocialFlyer

Flying_Sarah747 11th Nov 2003 20:19

I attended the open day in Perth, and it went pretty much like I expected.

1. Video

2. Take our resumes

3. Make us wait for over an hour

4. Sorry we didn't realise so many people would turn up (Yeah right, it's happened every other time you've been here!)

5. If we call you by 6pm we'll interview you, if not wait 2-3 months and we'll call you next time we're in Perth

Bit of a waste of time, but fun just to get out there and talk to others who are interested in the same thing. I met some really nice people who would have been wonderful for the job...Ex Ansett Crew, other QF short listers, but we weren't given the chance to prove ourselves.

I got 5 phone numbers from other people, and NONE of us got a call back, and we were all QF short listers or ex air crew. I think it's a bit mean to get everyone's hopes up, then let us all down. Why not tell us in the first place it's purely an information day and a chance to submit resumes, rather than telling us they'll call when they have no intention to?!?!?!

By the way, if anybody from Perth did get a call, let us know, and I take back what I'm saying, but I have a feeling they didn't call anybody.

Did the same thing happen in Brisbane??

OZcabincrew 11th Nov 2003 21:10

Hi Sarah!

I would've loved to get there and had planned to, but got pulled away at the last second. Didn't last time they have an EK walk in session in Perth, only about 6 or 8 resumes or something like that actually got sent back to Dubai for approval? I remember a lot of unhappy people putting posts on here (correct me if i'm wrong). Will definately be at the next one, although i expect it to be like the last two, however like you said Sarah, it's great to get out there and learn more about the airline and meet all of those other wonderful people in the same position!!!!

Good luck!

ps- how did you go with BA Sarah?

crazysapphire 11th Nov 2003 21:29

Emirates Open Day???

Hi people,

Looking at ur posts , makes me scared ..if that's wat happened in Perth or Brisbane, i think Singapore will be the same too...:{ ...ours will be on the 15th...nevertheless, just try our luck..

Cheers

Flying_Sarah747 11th Nov 2003 22:18

Hey crazysapphire!

I don't mean to put anybody off! Just go along and see what happens! I'm sure Emirates won't fly all the way around the world and see absoloutely nobody. It makes no sense! :) So GOOD LUCK for the 15th, and I wish you better luck than me! :)

Ozcabincrew...BA is a little dilemma for me...

1. At the moment I don't have enough money for the airfare back to London, but that should be ok very soon. (hahaha...STUPIDDDDDDDD me!!!)

2. With the amount they pay me, I'll have just enough to cover rent, bills and food. Unfortunately it's way too expensive to ship all my things over to London, such as my car, stereo, TV, VCR, microwave, fridge, bed etc. and since they only pay me enough to cover rent, food and bills, how the heck do I buy all these nessecities such as a bed, and I'll DEFINATELY be needing a really powerful heater???!!! I REALLY don't want to sleep on the COLD floor.

So if ANYONE has any ideas, PLEASEEEEEE let me know! :) I REALLY want to take this job!

AIRWAY 11th Nov 2003 22:45

Sarah,

Go the the pound stretcher shop :} :} :} you should find some nice deals... :}

Yes heater is a plus... :ok: weather is turning nasty now...

By the way i still have 100 Oz Dollars from my last visit, do ya want them :p

All the best with the flying

SocialFlyer 12th Nov 2003 15:01

Perth Open Day..

Hey Flying Sarah

Thanks for the feedback, I was expecting it would turn out like that, and I'm sure the same will happen on the Melbourne Open Day next week...

I'm not sure what Emirates is thinking but it is very annoying to think they advertise for these stupid open days and act as if they didnt think so many people would turn up . At the last Melbourne Open Day they had 1000 people waiting and they turned away everyone. Many applicants had come from all over Australia.

My friends over in Dubai say that Emirates is desperate for cabin crew, however they seem to be doing alot of nothing..

Anyway, now that I have that out of my system I feel a little better.. My only explanation for the Open Day is that the recruiters need an excuse to travel around the world and get paid to do so, so some head honcho has devised this Open Day idea  .. Good idea I think.

Cheers Guys

EK

Patence is a virtue. if they collect your resumes then be assured, they will definitely go through them and if you happen to have what they are looking for you definitely will get the call. remember their HR department has to handle around 1000 CV's that they got at the last open day held in dubai. might take some time, but we can wait  cant we???

babyblu 12th Nov 2003 21:02

Emirates open day

Hey ya'll out there
After having been to 2 EK open days - can fully understand your frustration. Went to 1 in Johannesburg, so many people turned up that it caused a stampeed, people tried to climb over the hotel fence to get seen. I ended up in squashed in a pile-up in the garden. (can laugh about it now) Hopefully this was a once off. People had also driven and flown from all parts of the country.(Feb 2002). Again it was cancelled.

I have just been to the 1 held in London, again loads of people turned up, their conference facility could only handle 50 at a time. I was one of the 1st there as the ad said 09h00 sharp. It started late, and no register was taken of what time you arrived so I could've arrived any time that day. Saying all that I refused to scrum up with the masses and waited all day to been seen with the last group at 16h00 that afternoon.

Even though I think the process is disorganised and unprofessional, if you want it badly enough - I guess you have to do what it takes. I'm still going to give it a shot.
