Transferable skills ?

I am busy updating my CV with a view to getting out of this business. Was wondering what you guys think are transferable skills learned through our unique role as "airline ambassadors" which can be used in the real world.

The silence is deafening. Surely I can do more than serve chicken or beef and clean sick up ? Someone help me to sell myself. Oops , perhaps I should rephrase that.

Question

Depends what you did before? What you want to do?

Be very sure you want to change direction?

I left flying 3 years ago and tailored my CV to a variety of jobs - got them all!!! However, missed flying, and came back. Be sure you want to get out, the grass isnt always greener!!!

Hi Aeroflirt. Try whacking these on your cv. Its amazing how a wee bit of poetic license can look impressive.

Provided a calming influence in stressful situations.
Met tight deadlines in ever-changing conditions
Worked as a well co-ordinated team member in confined spaces.
Senior first aid trained.
Superior customer service skills.
Interacted positively with people from all walks of life.
Responded to individual customer needs.
Adopted to ever-changing work situations within a short space of time.
Demonstrated flexibility to work different shifts.
Provided conflict resolution to resolve customer disputes.
Followed and monitored WH&S procedures.

Dont actually know what we can do after flying but by God this looks good on a cv. Really though, where do old hosties go to die????

As a so caled "Captain of Industry" (only time I will be one) I am often advising my distributors on the kind of skills required by their staff.
Cabin Crew should have a wide range of transferable skills I would have thought, or do you get so fed up with dealing with the public that you go to the equivalent of the elephants graveyard?

I am tempted to offer some tongue in cheek advice, but would rather hold back in case of the backlash!!!!!

Come now Homerj,

Retiscence does not suit you. Get your tongue out of your cheek and use it to amuse us. We need something to make us smile and judging from your past posts , you're the man who can. Can't speak for other hosties but I like a good laugh at myself and who knows , I may be able to lighten up any future interviews with some of your sugggestions........One point though , I DO NOT like the elephant's graveyard dig. Metaphorical or not. Please remember that hosties float off with their wheelie bags for eternal crew rest when we expire. Elephant's graveyard , really , what are you trying to infer ?

Lightbulb 7 Airlines later...

aeroflirt

Like you after flying Short Haul, Long Haul Scheduled, Budget and Charter I decided to get out of aviation due to lack of job security. It is very unfortunate that the glory days of aviation are over they may once again return but it was time for me to move on.

Here is my list of jobs/careers for ex-Cabin Crew who may or may not have the relevant qualifications.

Hotels/Hospitality: Depends on experience and knowledge ie Silver Service, Wine Experience etc can be very low payed at start but promotion prospects can be good (need qualifications for management) can be long hours with no minimum rest.

Tourism: Tourist reps and Guides just like charter airlines seasonal.

Cruise Ships/Ferries: P&O, Stenna, DFDS, Condor Ferries, Cunard, Carnival, Princess, Hebriddean, First Choice etc.

Customer Service/Call Centres: Usually dull and low payed jobs.

Sales: Not just in shops but for various companies ie Car Manufacturers good salary and percs.

Rail Industry: This is where I transfered my skills to. Sure it is not as glamarous as flying bit it does offer job security promotion prospects and a better dependable wage eg, Heathrow Express pax service assistant £19,791 starting salary Chiltern Railways Train Host £18500. London Underground Station Assistant £19000 Basic plus free travel in London . I think that is better than £9800 basic + £2 flight pay great in summer rubbish in winter if you have a job (applies to charter only)

I am sure that there are many more opportunities out there plus there is no harm in going back to college or Uni and retraining either full time or part time.

worktrain.gov.uk

Good luck I am sure that you find something suitable.

Thankyou MM,

I appreciate the time you have taken to give me some advice. Certainly food for thought. Got to tell you though , the starting salary for scheduled carriers is no higher than what you quoted for charter. As you say , the glamour days are history.

At the request of Miss Aeroflirt

Now I would like to make it perfectly clear, 100%, with no ambiguities, this is tongue firmly in cheek and nowhere else.

So please check your sense of humour quotient before responding with your barbed attacks.
Here goes:

1. Telling people where the fire exits are, and that all buildings are different, so even though you are a frequent user of building, please note the nearest exit, it mat be behind you. - Receptionist.

2. Walking backwards with a trolley – tea lady

3. Tea or coffee with the Big Mac meal – Restaurant server

4. Being able to open up a dinghy and get in it – Cowes yacht week demonstrator

5. Being able to open up a life vest – Cowes yacht week demonstrator

6. First aid training, always useful. Never forget it - No comment.

7. Saying hello 300 times day – Welcomer at Disney Store

8. Second language – very usefull when pretending you are not English when the yobs fall of the planes drunk and fight in the baggage hall.

9. Being able to apply your war paint in a cramped toilet in turbulence and dousing yourself in the most horrid perfume that would kill the SARS virus at a thousand yards– Make up and perfume sprayer in Dept Store.

10. Bar skills – Always useful on a Saturday night, dealing with us drunk punters. So says the barmaid in our local, " I used to be a Britannia stewardess you know" . Really, well walk backwards to the bar, and get me another Scotch and Coke please, luvvy.

I sit back and wait for the counter attack.

PS If anyone does want to send me their CV, I will be honoured to offer helpfull hints and suggestions.

I know a few ex-stewards working in commercial / ops positions within the ad-hoc airlines, well at least you know where most european countries and cities are, always useful in route planning

Aeroflirt

Are you a sulky, obstinate, unco-operative, lazy, bad tempered people hater? If yes, a guaranteed job on any High Street in the UK. From experience, may I recommend Woolies.

Gosh, I was always sooooo proud of my team.

I thought you had an account with Edam Stores. You know the ones who sell big knickers.

Didnt know Harvey Nix went upto a size 20, but I thnk M&S now cater for the more rotund botty.

Good luck.
