Cool Should Mobile Phones Be Banned From The Cabin?

If any of you have been reading the news recently then you will have seen the matter concerning the passenger and his incessant disregard for the rules of the airline regarding the use of mobile phones onboard. Even after the pilot came back and ordered him to switch it off he argued the t*** and refused. Well thanks God for the just desserts he received. I may not be a techie and I may not know that mobiles are as dangerous as they say they are but as long as they are part of the safety rules then by gum i will enforce those said rulings. This is where the new argument comes in and it appears some agree so much that moves are being made for mobiles to be banned from the cabin altogether to stop peopel being tempted from using them in-flight. Well about time I say ..... for those businessman out there I have to ask "Do you REALLY have to that thing surgically connected to your ear?" "will the world REALLY crumble if you are out of reach for a few more minutes?" Come on let's start thinking about more than ourselves!! Just a side note to some of the crew out ...... Beware the passenger that seems to be talking to himself!!! He may be mad yes but it more likely that he is trying to hide the fact that he is using a mobile by using one of those hands-free kits. Eagle eyes are required!!!
On that happy note I wish you all safest of flights and I wish you all the biggest allowances possible!!!

Well here in OZ, it is now illegal to use a mobile on the plane, it has just been legislated, so I guess it's offical, i love a black and white issue, it's so much easier to say to a pax, 'well, that is the rule' than to talk around the point!!

BA Purser: the thing to point out to your pax is that important people dont need to have phones jammed to there ears all the time, if you run a good operation (aviation or otherwise) it should run itself ie the most important people have people to answer there phones for them. Or something like that. I think,. right to much beer, of to answer that damn phone.

Enlightening replies guys but the question still remains ...... should pax be forced to put their mobiles in their hold baggage to stop the temptation of "forgetting" to switch them off? hmmm :/

Thumbs up

Over the ditch in New Zealand we also have laws banning the use of mobile phones onboard a/c its great!!!!!!

I/we advise/remind pax to switch off their phones and advise of legal requirement to do so in our welcome aboard PA. Now and then you spot a pax trying to have a sneaky one (phone call) but thats typical pax behavior.

I see no reason why phones should not be banned from the cabin or at least handed over to the airline for safe keeping during the trip - no one is that important that they have the right to risk others lives for their delusions of grandeur.

I hope that anyone caught using them gets banged away big tiime - it only needs a few to get punished before the rest get the message.

There are times when it is an accident. A chap in China inadvertantly left it on and the planes intsruments went 30 degrees out. I think it was a genuine oversight in this case as he was not using it. If the phone wasn't allowed in the cabin in the first place this may not have caused such a problem.

Incidently what would happen if the phone was in the hold but left on?

It may be better to have them handed over to the airline for safe keeping during the trip and handed back afterwards - with legislation to lock the errant ones away if they refuse or "forget" to hand them over.

on one of my flights, happily cruising at cruise level, all of a sudden the needles start pointing in the wrong direction, indications all gone haywire, i go back, see koe public using a mobile phone.
once off. all returned to normal.
so it does have an effect,
now in saying that, some other people believe, whether it is true is a different stroy is that while in the air crossing state or country boundaries, the moblie phone will successfully connect to another line elsewhere but the server/carrier/telecom retrievers are unable to locate the the mobile so there for unable to bill the call.
i will stick to the fact that instruments go haywire.
