Over the past 3-4 years the only options with QF have been fixed term or casual for people off the street, this was because QF wanted to reduce the number of permanent employees etc etc.

However, now with the new Industrial Relations Laws QF can effectively recruit new crew and offer them a Workplace Agreement. This agreement will cover the basics such as salary, sick leave, holidays and it may also include a few things specific to the role of cabin crew such as duty hours etc.

In the past if QF were offering permanent it was under the short haul EBA this is no longer a requirement as it is now law that a workplace agreement can be offered instead. Therefore instead of working under an EBA (which is a small book) your working life will be governed by your AWA (Australian Workplace Agreement) which could be 3 pages tops. As an example your salary could be $30K per year including all allowances. Im not sure how much if any union involvement is allowed when you negotiate your AWA with your employer in this case Qantas. I think though their input would be NIL considering thats why the laws were introduced.

If Qantas go down this path they will have a standard AWA for all new short haul crew it will be exactly same just different expiry dates depending on when you join. As senority and bidding is part of the EBA I dont think anyone working under an AWA will be able to benefit from these but you never know.

So now these new options are available to Qantas it will be interesting to see if they intend to go in this direction. Considering Qantas was very vocal in pushing for these changes and even donated a substantial amount of $$ to the Australian Business Council to promote these changes I dare say there is a very good chance this will be the case.

The people heading to Perth from Eastern (10) are very happy. They were all aware when they nominated Perth as a base that getting back to the eastcoast was going to take time.

They are all a really good bunch of people who are looking forward to moving over to Short Haul and Perth.

easternboy,

that doesn't bother me, my comments to wa.man wasn't about regionals coming over, it was in regards to something else. I'm sure the people coming over are lovely, that's great to hear, looking forward to working with them. My comments to wa.man were in reference to his "The Spirit of Australia, i don't think so!" remark. Wa.man, Qantas and a lot of other big and small businesses are going casual etc because it's obviously cheaper, it is business, nothing to do with not having the Spirit of Australia. We don't need people like you inciting negativity towards/against Qantas because of whatever reason or opinion you have of them, because then your negativity spreads, something of which we don't need in general or online. I agree, QF do some stupid things sometimes and I would love it if QF and other companies employed people on a full time basis, that would be great, i'm all for it, but if it does happen it is only in minimal quantities. What GalleyHag said is interesting and the next 12+ months will be very interesting to see what happens.

Oz,

''The Spirt of Australia''...The only chance of a fulltime cabin crew job with our national carrier is for English, Thai,s or Kiwis. How very Australian.
I have to agree with wa.man '' The Spirit of Australia'' I certainly dont think so either. Im sure most Aussies would think the same.

I can't work out what this new workplace agreement could mean. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Is it basically protecting the rights of workers, where as when you're casual they can basically do anything with you???

Another question...With the casual positions, how do the rosters work? Do you get a roster or is it that they just call you when they need you? Is there a basic salary or are you just paid for what flying you do??

And also, fixed term positions, what happens when the time is up? Are people usually offered permanent positions, or put onto another fixed term contract, or are they let go?

13 February for the JQ people. Is it all one school or are the EAA/SSA people starting in January as was planned?

JQ asked for a later course as they cannot keep up with the turn over due to inadeqaute recruitment forecasts.
